Its very odd, there are a lot of things that point to major disasters happening in the year 2012. Some already mentioned here, but another is the solar cycle. The sun has an 11 year cycle where the sun spot activity starts out at very inactive (year 1) and ends at year 11 where it goes nuts. In 1859 it was at the peak of its 11 year cycle; and was one of the biggest solar flares ever to hit Earth. (biggest in 500 years) Since during this time the only technology that was effected were morse code machines. It also caused a ton of wild fires and odd weather.

Now in this day obviously we rely on so many more devices, it is impossible to predict what another solar flare like that one would do. Its very likely the whole world would go into a blackout, making all of our satellites and various other communications worthless. This could last for as long as a couple of months. It just so happens to be that 2012 is the end of an 11 year cycle, meaning the sun will be very active. Judging from past years and current data scientists are thinking that the end of this cycle will be a very violent one; quite possibly the most active since 1859. The amounts of radiation that will be shot at the Earth is immense. To compare, if you go flying over either one of the poles, while a solar flare hits us; it would be the equivalent of having 100 chest x-rays. The radiation would simply mess you up, if not kill you. Now this is during any normal time, if it were to happen during one of the sun's biggest flares... well I don't know what would happen.

Normally I don't believe all this mumbo jumbo crap about people/cultures predicting when Armageddon will take place; I just find it odd that so many things point to the year 2012.
