Thing is though, people have to remember that in order to keep selling vehicles like the Wrangler, they have to have these small vehicles to offset the MPG numbers in order to meet the average numbers that the gov't decided to implement.
In any case, hopefully they offer a manual with the 4WD system on the turbo-4.
This is exactly it, Jeep isn't trying to cater vehicles like this and the new cherokee to their current customers they are trying to bring in sales of higher gas mileage vehicles so that they will be able to continue to sell Jeeps like the Wrangler.
Jeep are doing the right thing, they cannot survive purely on hardcore 4x4 vehicles and this should compete well against other mini crossovers such as the Qashqai.
If Jeep want to survive as a brand, they need to move forward with the other manufacturers. Selling rugged 4x4s to a minority will not go very far, appealing to the masses who want comfort and efficiency will.
Personally, I dislike the new Cherokee but think it will sell well, and I think the Renegade will sell well too IF MARKETED CORRECTLY! I've never seen a Jeep advert in the UK, and I read most magazines and surf the net all day!Although I hear Jeep are shirt sponsor for a big Italian soccer/football team called Juventus so that's another step in the right direction by Fiat at least
It's on the Jeep web site now and I like it. If I needed a commuter vehicle that I could also run through the snow; I'd consider it. Way better than a Subaru or Rav-4, though the powertain details are light at this time.
Base trim level will be the 1.4L turbo from the Dart, behind either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed DDT. Most will come with the 2.4L/9-speed combo from the Dart and Cherokee. Expect roundly the same HP numbers and city/highway figures in the high 20s/low 30s, comparable to other small crossovers.
Personally, I love it. It's exactly the DD I wanted. It'll carry everything I move on a regular basis, it'll run in any weather, it'll be great on gas, it'll handle rough roads and light trails and, hopefully, it'll be cheap. It's the perfect vehicle to keep miles off my 'real' Jeep.
Overseas markets will have access to 1.6L and 2.0L Fiat turbo diesel engines, but those engines aren't currently built to North American emissions spec. However, they're both nearing the end of their lifecycles, and their replacements should be built to be NA-ready, so expect a mid-cycle refresh offering a diesel option for North America, similar to how the Grand Cherokee and Ram 1500 received their diesels.
but... the 91 YJ already killed it. the name was "ruined" a long, long time ago. anything is better! even a re-badged CR-V  actually, the white walls do kinda say "street jeep" anyway (to me...anyone else?)
I'm actually kinda happy they didn't try to slap that name on some wrangler... I think everyone would've been scrutinizing it that much harder. as a new Jeep vehicle line, it can make it's own market....
I think I'll gladly trade my jetta DD for a jeep that's *gasp* good on gas.
The new Dodge Challenger comes close, as do the newer Mustangs. Obviously they can't live up to their heritage entirely because of safety issues, but those 2 are close to their roots.
That "Renegade" does not even have a removable top, it should be called the Cherokee Mini or something more fitting like that. Now if Jeep decided to make a Renegade package for the Wrangler, that would be about as close as it gets to heritage and would probably sell better anyways because the Wrangler is the bread and butter of the current lineup hands down.
I don't see what most of your points are. Why would they make something exactly like a car that's 30-60 years old? Thats stupid. The wrangler is the only "real" jeep left and I doubt it'll last too much longer. You have no idea how the car industry works if you think jeep will actually make something like the old renegade or wagoneer. Those days are past, get over it.
If you're looking to pick a fight, I could give a rats *** tough guy. It's an opinion. I never claimed to know "how the car industry works". You obviously think you do. Congratulations.
It's cool if you like the new Renegade. I won't judge. I'm sure you'll look cute driving one.

Is it just me, or with every new model year the cars keep getting uglier?
I'm all for new advancements in safety and technology, but damn don't make it look so retarded. They could've easily made the new Cherokee pretty much the same without giving it the pissed off Asian front grille. I mean the 2014 Grands look pretty good, not sure what happened with the new Cherokee and this Renegade thing.
