1986 mercedes 300d transmission problem....

I know its usually a bad idea to ask tech questions in gd but her it goes;

I'm about to aquire a 1986 mercedes 300d non-turbo deisel auto trans.. for free!

I'm told that it needs a new transmission though.
Apparantly at around 30 mph, it decides to just shift into neutral.

thats all i know as of now (im picking it up on saturday). has anyone heard of this problem before? or does anyone know of a good mercedes forum or something i can go to?
im corssing my fingers for an electrical problem or a broken vacuum line...

im hoping to get this fixed and to a veggie-oil conversion.

and lame jokes a funny pictures are wlecome in this thread.....

Here is a good source for parts. At least they were for me a few years ago.

your transmission uses vacume to adjust and help shift. when the vacume systems fail people think the tranny is on the way out. on the drivers side of the transmission there is a vacume modulator. check to see if it looks ok. www.mercedesshop.com has tons and tons of info on this.

Maybe he thinks because it says 300d and not 300TD, the 300TD was a station wagon and did not stand for turbo diesel like a lot of people think. My parents had an 1981 300TD and they finally got rid of it when the transmission started slipping around 6-7 years ago.

i actually havent seen it in person yet, so im not sure on the specifics.. i know that it was imported from europe and that technically it isnt legal here due to emissions standards... maybe that has something to do with the non-turbo?
here are some pics my dad sent me:
