02 Exploder tips??

Looking at an Eddie Bauer, 2002 with 120k for my daugter. I'm interested in knowing any of the trouble spots that may cost big $ at this age and mileage. I know alot of people will suggest a small starter car but I'm also looking at a 94 full size Bronco for her. She's an accident looking for a place to happen this kid, and when it happens i would prefer she's in a tank. I have one daughter in a ZJ and feel good about that, but she's alittle more aware than the other daughter. My 3'rd daughter is in a 88 YJ with 8''s of lift 360 amc and 36's. Pretty sure she's gonna die. and the wifes in a WJ. WTF I drive a 92 caravan.

I have a 99 which I think is the same body style.

I have had my xmission rebuilt but other than that everything has been simple stuff.

Get an IAC from Napa,

Why not a Volvo? They're safer than even the full size SUVs and she will have a very hard time rolling it. When she does crash there will also be less chance of her killing somebody as well. Get her a wagon and it'll have all the room she could need.

Of course if she's an accident waiting to happen why don't you wait until she shows herself to be a good, responsible driver?

Please.... I have an 01 sport and the only issue I have had sometimes not all my 4x4 selector is pissy. Ford upgraded the explorer 01-up. The newer 4.0 is strong and reliable. I honestly do not have any complaints.

I have heard that is a sticky solenoid in the xfer case. I havent had the problem yet. easy temp fix is to whack it with a wrench other wise replace the solenoid.

To the OP www.explorerforum.com is as good a site for them as JF is for jeeps.

My tip for you: don't pay attention to what the owner's manual and door sticker say about tire pressure.

Thanks fellas, sounds like there are no majors.
As for being a good mechanic to own an explorer... well I own 2 Heeps, so ya, not bad. Besides, It pisses off my Lexus owning neighbours when they have to look at my parts piles.
Wouldn't buy a volvo. She likes bashing through the bush.
Thanks for the link.
And Spark...well I just dont know what to say.

I think they are resonably reliable. My brother owned 3 up until his last vehicle, when he bought a Sequoia.

I am real wary of the handling characteristics of those Explorers. Ford SUVs handle poorly and If I'm not mistaken that era Exploder was notorious for rolling on its back like a dead coackroach. An illegal alien hit my brother's two week old model from the front at fairly low speed and he still rolled it. Every Ford Truck I've ever owned up until my 03 Expedition has handled like poo. Top heavy and numb. Wouldn't be my first choice for a new driver. If its the newest generation with the Independent rear axle like my Expedition, then its probably ok. Huge improvement.

My parents own a 00 exploder and have to have the front end fixed yearly since they've owned it. I don't remember what goes wrong but I think it's the same thing every time. It's also underpowered.

They call it the Petunia with good reason.

My 01 has alot of guts. The newer ford 4.0 SOHC has 240hp. It will blow the doors off of a Jeep 4.0 anyday. I know that is meaningless but I am just saying they have more then enough power to pull onto a highway without getting killed. And in 02 They were totally redesigned. My 01 looks like the newer Sport tracs. I will be selling mine soon because I am craving a cherokee again. Income tax=Mods. And I am not lifting my explorer
