Where to go for fun?

Hi all,

I was just wondering the above title. I plan on going with my friend somewhere to camp, trail drive, and maybe fish/shoot off some rounds. I found this place called Calico - it's a little ways off (Im in Irvine), but Im willing to make the drive. I've never been there before though; do any of you guys have an opinion on it?

If there is someplace nicer or closer, please let me know!

Never did any shooting up there, did allot of wheeling. You won't be able to do any fishing in the area but if you come back over the San Bernardino mountains there will some and even more off-roading.I was stationed at Fort Irwin for a few years, which is the same area. There some of the best wheeling there I have ever done.

Here is a pic of me enjoying some of what it offers:

Here is a video I just found. Google and you will find allot of info:

Cleghorn trail is really cool and you might be able to go fishing at silverwood lake but no shooting.

I haven't been to Calico for shooting or trail riding yet.

The Big Bear area in the San Bernardino Mountains has trails to run, places to camp, fish and shoot (although not all in the same spot). Unfortunately, I think shooting isn't allowed for the time being due to high fire risk. Once wet weather returns they'll probably re-open the shooting areas.

Here's the SBNF website for shooting areas/rules and regs: http://www.fs.usda.gov/activity/sbnf...6225&actid=106

Yep, there is some incredible wheeling in that area.

I used to be stationed in Irvine way back when there was a base there

Death Valley and Calexico are some of my favorites places for a getaway but both are a bit of a drive: 3-5 hours

Death Valley has some great trails and miles of nothing to worry about when shooting. Used to be able to cruise up to Charles Manson's cabin and spend the weekend but I hear someone burned it down. There are a scattering of cabins in the park that are free and on a first-come basis. I would suggest a GPS.

Calexico doesn't offer much in the way of wheeling but we used to head there during dove season for hunting. Border Patrol doesn't mind you pitching tents on their drag paths, the farmers love for you to shoot the millions of rabbits eating their alfalfa crops (alfalfa fed = tasty rabbits), clouds of doves flying by in the morning (guaranteed to get your daily limit by lunchtime), huge catfish in the All-American Canal (though I wouldn't eat them). As an added bonus, you may get the opportunity to apprehend illegals crossing the border. Though we caught some only once, we always brought zipties just in case.

As has been said earlier, Big Bear is also awesome for wheeling and camping but no shooting.

Fort Irwin is still there, it is right by Calico.
