I own the very bike of which you speak. I had been riding a drastically upgraded and modified 1991 GT Talera, but finally decided on a new bike. I ride almost daily and have an extra set of street wheels for in town commuting, but slap on my dirt tires for the trails. All in all, I'm very please d with the bike for the money I spent.
The cons are few, but important. First.....It's a big bike....a lot bigger than my old Talera. Second...I've had several problems with the rear derailleur hanger getting bent. Third....My front derailleur needs minor adjustment after every ride on the trails. Fourth...and that's it....Whenever I change from street tires to trail tires I have to readjust the disc brakes. The gap between the pad and the disc is so narrow that you can never seem to get the wheel hub back in the exact same place...Therefore, they rub and require adjustment or you're fighting the brakes when you ride. Other than that....I like it, but I kinda wish I'd bought the Specialized Rockhopper that was sitting next to my Trek.

Specialized Hardrock. For $600 you can get the Sport Disc
http://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCBkModel.jsp?sid=09Hardrock&eid=107

Here's a visual aid, my well (ab)used Hardrock Sport. This thing is the Jeep of bikes, I've been beating the piss out of it for years and so far it's fairly indestructible. Finally needs new brake pads though.

I would recommend any Specialized bike. I love my '96 Stumpjumper and am looking at getting a new Rockhopper next Summer.

x2 specilized are sweet, i got the trek 3700 though, it was a good solid bike, i destroyed it though, that bike isnt made for 3 foot drops and jumps on the trails. reswob, kickstand, comon seriously, thats the most dangerious thing on your bike. but im looking for an trail bike not to destroy and the hardrock looks prety sweet.

it looks like you ride your bike alot, if your taking a turn and your kickstand turns it can make you fall pretty bad.

I've never had a problem before. It's bolted on pretty tight, I don't think it's going anywhere.

Why have a kickstand? I have seen where people purposely put them on their $3K bikes...makes no sense.

Personally, I've never gotten the hang of getting the bike to balance on it's own in the garage. Maybe it's just me...

im just trying to be nice and tell you that its not that safe to have a kickstand on a bike.

but if you want to be like the guys why go to walmart but a mongoose, ride on the trail with no helmet take no warning, then crash and shut down trails. that is cool to.

Sorry, I have never, ever before heard of anyone being hurt by a kickstand. I'm having trouble visualizing how one could possibly injure a rider. Maybe some pics would help?
