I've owned many handguns. I love a good wheel gun (revolver). I'm also a police officer that carries a glock .40. Glocks are ugly but they are the best point and shoot gun you can get. Here is what I suggest. Go to a gun shop and plan to be there for a few hours. Pick up every gun and see how it feels in your hand. If you don't like the texture or angle then pick up another one. I know what I want my wife to get. She wants a glock 19 but I'm trying to talk her into the smith and Wesson shield 9mm. It is an awesome little gun if you can find it right now. Just remember, guns are like shoes. Everyone had their favorite but your favorite may not fit me like it fits you. Good luck!

Sorry buddy, but that is a matter of opinion of which I do not agree. Shooting handguns for over 36 years the best for me is the 1911. That said I luv my revolvers

My dad has a 1911 and they are some smooth shooting guns and I will own one some day. By point and shoot I meant they don't have a safety. You just squeeze the trigger. No safety to turn off. Sorry for the confusion. I bought one of the ruger lcr's 38 +p before the 357 came out. It is one of my favorite summer carry guns. I used to have a Taurus 357 and I kick myself every day for selling it. Some of the guys make fun of me for carrying a wheel gun but throw in a couple speed strips and I'm set. They carry easy in the pocket.

If you want to do just point and shoot, you might want to look into a GLOCK. They offer them in different sizes and calipers. I personally had a GLOCK 17 for years and it was a department gun. really sweet. The 17 ' s bullets are lighter than the .45 ACP I have now. the ACP (GLOCK 21) has more man stopping power then the light and faster G17. it also depends on the ammo. NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER shoot reloaded ammo in a GLOCK. mine got stuck in the barrel , thanks god it was not on a competition. you can also have your GLOCK "dressed up" with a different trigger pull ( limited trigger pull weight), as well as different sights and a handle grip. They make lots of nice toys for, your tool. I always shot GLOCK, I grew up on it. it's a gun , if you take care if it , keep it nice cleaned and oiled, it will never disappoint you. try if how it feels in your hands, how it fits on the grip (size wise) and then see maybe of some of your friends have one and you can go shoot with them to,try it. I love my GLOCK 21.

I don't know about that part. I was a Cop for 28 years. Started out with a wheel gun, then carried a Sig P226 9mm, ended up carrying a 1911. When Glock's H&K's, and 1911 became authorized I went with the 1911. Why? Because I just couldn't "piont shoot" the Glock as fast as the 1911.

Never owned a handgun before. Gonna go to basspro or a lgs and try to find a S&W 686 Plus (3-4'' barrel). Prob around $800-850 depending. Shoots .357 mag. for me and .38-special for my wife.

Well since I started this thread over 4 months ago, I now own one handgun and have one on order (going on 3 months now). I ordered a Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm (CA Version/10Rd Mag) in Late Dec...and waited and waited (and still waiting).

In Mid January, I found a LGS that had the S&W M&P22 (basically same form factor just .22LR) as the M&P9, and I picked it up... have taken it to the range a number of times, probably 600-800 rounds and have fun shooting something that isn't crazy expensive for ammo ($.05-.10/rd) while I wait for the M&P9.

Realistically neither are going to super home defense (in the unlikely event that I need it)... I'll get a Magazine of +P 9mm ammo to leave in my bedside safe in the event SHTF, but for the most part, they are for recreation, plinking and target practice only.

I've started my own semi-gun related accessory business since all of this started (see my Sig) and have probably spent more time thinking about gun/ammo stuff than Jeep stuff since the first of the year.

Wade

If it's for fun, load the .357, but if it's for home defense, stick to .38+P in the cylinder.

I have the S&W SSR in my nightstand with +P loaded up and a couple of speed loaders next to it. One with more +P and the other with some .357 just in case something crazy is going down.

I've shot a couple of friends Glocks (not 100% which models, but full sized 9mm, .40 and .45)... It felt like I was holding a piece 2x4"... I wasn't impressed with the in-hand feel and can't say I liked the stock sights much (although not super excited about the stock M&P sights either)

I cant really say to much because all i grew up on was a G17 and here i have my G21. I shot the standard LE beretta and dont like it as much as my G. I have the trigger modified to I think 1-2 lbs pressure and it rocks. Sweet. Was thinking about getting rubber grips for my G. I think it just widely depends on what you are used to. The sights i think are ok. I think they are good in the dark or you can get them modified for darkness. Laserpointer is also avail but that takes the fun out of competition shooting.

I like my colt 1911 for the range, but for concealed carry i have a glock 19 that only jams when i put in my 33 round mag) and a bersa thunder 380(for back-up in-case i run out of mags for my glock). For home defense I have a Remington 870 with extended tube which holds 6 00 buck shot.

I have for home defense also a Rem 870 pump action shotgun tactical version. Mine though holds only 4 rounds at a time. Nice shotgun. Only thing i dont like are the sights. I think i am getting those modified. Doube 00 buck is also nice. In case out SD takes too long to get here and SHTF...

Oh i forgot to say watch for reloads. I had one jamming in my barrel and the second round went right on top of it! Luckily nithing happened to me. Could have been nasty. What i learned from that: Glocks dont like reloads.
