what is the purpose of the valet key?

So i found a key in my jeep that says valet on it. Its just a metal key with obviously no sentry on it so the vehicle will not drive with it. I only have one real key and the only purpose i can see for this one is that it will open the door if i happen to lock the real key inside my jeep.

Are you sure it's not a Sentry key? The sentry guts don't take much room at all. A valet key is meant to open the door and start the car, but not open the glovebox (or trunk if it weren't a Jeep).

I'd have to scan the owners manual again, but I thought the key only opened the hatch and the doors. It cannot be used to start the vehicle.

it opens the vehicle and will start it but the engine will die almost immediately. which makes sense because its not a sentry key. so is the only purpose to open a locked door? i dont understand why its called a valet key.

It's flat so you can keep it in your wallet. It's called a valet key b/c it will get you in your Jeep when the brain dead valet locks your keys in it.

.

since I dont know if you bought it used or what heres what I have to say..out of curiosity I had a regular old key made copied from the key with remote and such, and what your describing is exactly what the copy does. Opens everything and starts the car for like 5 seconds....sounds like you've found a copy....i couldnt stomach paying 150 bux for a key...insane...

The valet key in my 09 opens the front door lock and locks the glovebox. When you use the valet key to open the door all is good until you actually pull on the door and then the horn starts honking like mad. The old sentry alarm gotcha. I put mine in my wallet in case I ever lock myself out. To get a new key you have to buy the new style fob from Chrysler for 190 bucks so stated the dealer.
