What to do?!

Hi Guys,

I was looking for some advice about some issues I'm having with my Grand Cherokee WK (55 plate in the UK).

I've had an oil leak for a while, it's apparent when I park the car up (you see a small puddle of oil each time), and when you look under the engine pan there are drips on of oil. A guy noticed it when I was getting my regular service (oil change etc).

I took it to a mechanic who I usually use, unfortunately he didn't have time to fix it. He stated it's probably a leak within the oil cooler (I've heard the orange O-Rings deteriorated over time). I have checked the turbo inlet, which is the newer black seal (as again opposed to the orange one), I just wondered if anyone has had any issues like this before and how they properly determined the issue and if possible how much it cost!

The other issue is the battery light came on the other day and now the battery is dying after around 6 miles of driving, I charge it up on the battery charger but it dies pretty soon after. It seems that perhaps it could be an alternator, but the battery seems to die very quickly (even if it were an alternator issue). Perhaps anyone may of had this issue before!

Thanks for your time,

James

Ah right, was gonna suggest a garage if you were local to me. If you go on the site linked by Brit, there's a trusted garages section covering most of the UK so if it's not something you fancy taking on yourself, you might be able to find someone knowledgeable close to you

No worries, hope you get it sorted. I'm in Naaarfolk & there's a specialist in Norwich I use a lot. He used to work for the main dealer here for about 10 years then went independent about 15 years ago. Certainly knows his stuff

Charge the battery full then take it immediately to a car parts store and have them test it for internal short.... possibility. If it checks out good then its the alternator most likely. A CRD with a good battery will travel 160 to 220 miles running on just the battery... I know because I have had a dead alternator twice while on long trips. That make me suspect the battery if faulty. May be both.

It sounds like you have a CRD, you didn't say.

Before you dig into the oil cooler, make sure that CCV oil is not dripping down where the air intake mates with the turbo. Even though you have a black seal...it could still be bad and still leak... but less likely.
