I think the Hemi is more sensitive to the oil type and weight because of the MDS. With the other engines I agree with you.

Is the prefilter all that necessary or is it just a convenience piece to keep the filter cleaner, longer?

I can't say with certainty but I would say yes because if for no other reason the filter cone is not completely isolated/sealed off from the engine bay.

My take is people have their own opinions about oils, filters, etc...The jeep has been running great with the new oil and hopefully keeps doing so. To me if the oil is the same weight as each other they are pretty much the same. Im sure there are minor differences but none we can tell or that I even care to tell.

Most oils meet requirements to be considered 3-4 different viscosities anyway. A 5W-30 oil will sometimes cover everything from 0W-10->10W-40
