Weird Problems Lately (Bad Key Message)

Hello everyone! I wanted to get some opinions/solutions for a recent problem that I've been having. Let me give you some details on what's been going on with my 05 WK.

I was driving home the other day and noticed that my center stack lights were all out. None of the lights were on, but the radio and the buttons on the radio did work. I didn't really think much of it until it kept happening.

I also noticed that when the center stack lights are out, the tail lights also don't work (the brake lights do, but the running lights at night are not on). I also have aftermarket LED tail lights that I have had absolutely no problems with. Anyways..... In order to correct this, I simply turn off the key and then turn it back on. It usually corrects it.

The other day I got a message about a BAD KEY after I stopped for coffee in the morning. It started fine, but shut right off. The BAD KEY message came up. It also said that the key needs programmed. During this time it wouldn't let me start it. Not sure if these problems are related, but they just started happening.

Has this anyone happened to anyone else? Any quick suggestions before taking it to the dealership?

Have you run a load test on the battery recently, if it hasn't been done, do that first. How old is the current battery?

Pep Boys, Advanced, they all do it free usually.

Next, i'd point the finger towards the ignition switch as it causes quite a few issues with these vehicles.

I had it tested a few months ago. They said it was okay.

The center console lights going out, that's what is throwing me off towards charge.

I'd start pointing the finger at the ignition switch next. Others will chime in i'm sure.

I would second the ignition switch, especially if you never replaced it on 2005 model year. They have updated/superseeded the part a number of times since 2005. Very common issue and I would start there.

It's been driving me crazy. If I simply turn the key off, and then start the car back up the lights will generally work.

What all is involved in replacing a starter switch?

Would an ignition/starter relay make it do this?

Thanks for posting that, Shafer. The dealership quoted me $400-$500 to replace the ignition switch. If I could replace mine for under $50, I'm going to do it. I just hope that the problem doesn't get worse before it gets mailed to me and then I get time to put it in.

Did you replace your's?

I sold my truck before I fixed it.

You can call the dealer and ask for a price on the part itself, and do the job yourself? Give that a shot first.
