weird electrical problem?

I just bought a 2006 WK GC Limited after driving a 93 GC for 17 years. I am having a weird electrical issue. At night, randomly all of the lights on the dash will light up and go out for a second including head lights. It seems to do it when the turn signal is on. Any ideas?

Sounds like a rash of multi-function stalk problems recently. MerlinTec?

Ignition switch. It's a very common problem with WK's. $48 part takes 30min-1hr to swap depending on how good you are at working on cars. Would fix it soon though as once it starts it progressively tends to get worse.

LimitedHemi,

I'll give that a shot. Thanks for helping out a "newbie" to the WK world.

Has anyone else here experienced a similar problem with the ignition switch? Did replacing it correct your problem?

I always work on if the heater blower is also cutting out with the lights it's the ignition switch if not I go for light switch.

Last week the Jeep Dealer replaced the ignition switch (no cost-still under warranty). We'll see if this solves the problem.

Keep us posted and good luck!

What was the mileage on the 93 when you traded her in? Any major repairs in that time?

So far, so Good. The problem hasn't occured again. Time will tell if the ignition switch was the culprit.

Who said I traded her in? I still have her. I can't seem to bring myself to put her up for sale.

230K and still going strong. Mechanically, it's probably the best vehicle I have owned. Only experienced the usual issues common to ZJs, never anything major. My wife was tired of the electrical gremlins and just ready for something a bit more luxurious. I guess I'm lucky she agreed to a newer Grand Cherokee.

Any update on the ignition switch replacement. Any re-occurence? Put my 05 in the shop yesterday for the flickering dash problem too. They called their special jeep service tech Guru who is supposed to help them with unique problems. He told the dealership tech that it was a well know problem; that jeep believes it to be an electrical load issue. Jeep does not know the root cause of the problem and he offered no solutions. Other then to say they didn't believe it was a serious issue that posed any real harm. I'm not really good with that; so I have a meeting with the Service Mgr in the a.m. If nothing else I will ask them to work with me on ignition switch replacement. Sounds like a pretty cheap shot in the dark.

The dealer replaced the ignition switch a couple of weeks ago. The problem seems to be fixed.

Unfortunately, the new ignition switch fix did nothing for me. Blasted thing still blinks like a Xmas tree.

I find myself in the same boat here. Though I am struggling to get my dealer to do anything. They don't seem to think it's a problem since they can't reproduce it.

I never noticed if the heater blower cut in or out on mine.

My dealer couldn't re-produce my issue either; so I took video of the problem with my cell phone one evening while driving home and then showed it to them. They still tried re-producing the issue in the shop for a day and couldn't and wanted to know if one of the tech's could drive my jeep home at night to see the problem for himself; I said sure...but what good is that going to do you? They agreed and swapped out the iginition switch as a favor to me. Didn't work as previsously noted. I can re-produce the problem on mine with or with out the blower coming on. I'm back at square one for the moment.

Tech called me this morning. He's going to explore the headlight switch and ignition switch. It's frustrating that they don't seem to want to do anything about it, nor do they seem concerned that it is a huge safety problem. Now I guess I need more social advice on how to get some one to do something then technical advice on what's wrong.
