Water Pump maintenance?

So my local trusted mechanic recommended new radiator hoses as well as a coolant fluid flush. My rig has 119k on it so I'm sure it's do for that since I've had it for 80k of that and it's never been done.

Question is, since they'll have it all drained should I have them change the water pump too? Or are these things a "run it til it breaks" item? I've just never seen it on a preventive maintenance post.

Since your draining the coolant I'd replace it and the thermostat. Saves you going back and draining the coolant again when the water pump eventually fails. Just my thought.

A water pump is a hit or miss with how long it will last. Some fail at 30k miles, some last 230k miles! I'd leave it alone unless you start hearing noise or seeing it weeping from the weep hole on the bottom of it.
If you're just going to replace parts just because they are old, that can get really expensive!

id run it till it takes a dump... I think the coolant change and new hoses will only extend the life of the pump.

I'm here in Florida, personally I flush my coolant system every year or two. I'm a firm believer in flushing fluids (and changes, oil, trans, etc). often to avoid an issues. Coolant / Antifreeze degrades. and they normally have something to lubricate the water pump and so on. With the high temps here, it's brutal on fluids.

Just my 2 cents.

Water Pump maintenance would have been great for me, but never heard of it before. WP on my CRD took a crap the other day. Walked out from store and had coolant all over the ground. Lucky/unluckly I was not far from dealer and a trip there, 3-days later, and a $840 bill and it was replaced. $57 for serp belt, $445 for pump and $270 for labor; my parts are discounted, normal price for pump would be $637 and belt $82.20.

$445 for pump

What kind of pump was that? What size engine?
Just curious. :-)

Water pumps, by the way, eventually, will go bad on just about any vehicle.
So you're definitely not alone there :-)

I'd guess it was a Mopar pump. And since it was a CRD, it probably came from Mercedes. That price sounds about right for that.
