Unfortunate trip back from MN

Let me start off by saying how much I hate BP gas stations!!! My wife and I left MN about 10:30 in the morning. We get to Worthington MN and need to fuel the CRD up so we go to a BP gas station. I drove up and grabbed the green pump, which always means diesel. Except to BP! I left the motor running, put the pump in the tank and, by muscle memory, flip the little switch to auto fill and then walked inside the gas station to use the restroom. I walk back outside and the pump had shut off. I look down at the green pump, as I was taking it out of the tank, and saw that it had in pen writing the word "gas" on it. I look up at the machine and see in small writing that the green handle in BP's mind was regular gas. I just pumped a whole tank of gas into my CRD. I about lost my mind!

I go inside to the attendant and explained what just happend. She says, "Oh, that happens all of the time." She calls a tow truck to tow me to a diesel repair shop. I wait an hour and a half for the tow truck. The tow truck finally arrives and the driver immediatley says, "You're the third guy I had to tow away because of using the wrong fuel." After he hooks me up, he literally tows me around the block to the repair shop. I could have pushed it there!

Now we are at the repair shop. A guy walks out and says that he wont be able to get to me for about 2 hrs. Im trying to maintain my cool very hard at this point. After about 15 min, a girl walks out and asked, "are you the folks who had the fuel mishap?" I tell her that I am and she says that the gas station just called and said that I only paid for 6 cents of gas. I'm like, that cant be....I filled up....(l know I put the pump in and flipped the auto filler switch) Unless some miracle of God happend, I have a full tank of gas. I go into the Jeep and turn it on. The fuel gauge was exactly where it was before I fueled up. I could not believe this! I have never flipped the auto fill switch and had it stop on me before. I was so thankful that I did not pump gas into the motor! BP needs to change there freaking pump colors to match every other gas stations. I am an idiot to for not reading the kind of gas. Tow ended up being $50 but will be cover by insurance.

So after the above crap happended, we are heading south on this desolate single lane HWY at around 10pm. We were doing about 75mph when this deer decides to run out in front of us. I slam on the brakes and THUMP, we hit the deer. I stop and get. I cannot see anything because it is so dark but can see that there is a good size dent in the front drivers side quater panel. My wife is freaking out about the deer, so I go over and checked it out. We had knocked the deer back accross the road. It was DOA. As the wife is crying about the deer, I continue letting my anger about the mishaps of our trip out! At least we were safe. Check out some pictures:

Ouch and Ouch. Sorry to hear about the bad day you had, just seems like some days you cannot get a decent break. Deer can really do some damage to your car. Hope you have better luck for a long time after this.

You did not start your engine and run gas into it, you did not have to pump out the gas and you were able to continue on your trip after hitting a deer.
Sounds to me like you were very lucky, things could have been much worse!

I hate BP also, wtf green handle pumps are for diesel.
My BP saga, Last year I was in Iowa on my way back to Chicago from a trip out west. I needed fuel & pulled into a BP, I saw the green handle and pumped it in. As I pulled the nozzle out something click in my head and I realized I pumped about 21 gallons of gas into my tank. Went in to the station & like you I waited for a couple hours and heard the stories of how many people do the same thing every day. Unlike you I actually pumped gas into my tank. Luckily I did not turn the key. They disconnected the fuel line then crank & crank until all the fuel was out.
The place then tried to charge me for the disposal of the fuel, thus just after I watch the guy pout it into his truck tank. They chuckled and took it off the bill.

LSJ8510, I hear ya. That sucks that actually pumped it. When I thought I pumped gas, I asked the attendant if they could just drain it on site. They said they wouldnt do it. Probably just a way for them to keep their tow company in business. You would think after all the accidents, they would have replaced the colors.

Rwebber77, you are not too far away from where this happened. Mankato is about 40 mi north of Worthington. What about turkey day Ryan?

Wow,
Sounds like the Final Destination movie. At least no one got hurt in the accident except the deer(did you get the deer meat by the way) and no damage was done to the WK from the gas misshap.

Hi I have the 3.0 diesel Mercedes engine in my jeep grand cherokee. My wife drove it and when the gas light came on she stopped at a full serve gas station and said she wanted 30 dollars of gas that is $1.29 a litre. She had to go in to pay for the gas and when she came the lady had pumped regular gas in it. My wife was smart enough not to start it. The gas station has a garage and said they will drop the tank and drain and clean it out. Charging me 210 bucks. My question is when I changed the fuel filter there was a knob you can twist to bleed out the air. When the the mechanic cleans and replaces the tank should he crack the knob to run run any regular gas out?

If you didn't start it, there should not be any gas in the lines. You should be good.

In Colorado and Kansas, yellow handles mean E85 ethanol. Standards for handle color/fuel type? We don't need no stinkin' standards!

Being from that part of the state, yes the deer can get you on those dark county highways. Happens quite a bit unfortunately...and being from a very small town, the pump handle colors had no bearing on the gas coming from the pump...

Sorry to hear about the Jeep, but glad everyone's ok.

Glad you didn't acutally put that fuel in your engine. Don't come to Iowa, the pump handle can be any color in this state. I have seen regular gas handles black, green, red, and yellow. Diesel is the same way, except red, I have never seen that. Most of the time they follow normal standards. My favorite station in town all the diesel pump handles are black. Teaches you just have to make sure pay attention what pump you pull up to.
Sorry to hear about the deer. Pretty common is this neck of the woods.
