Transfer Case Fluid for 05 Hemi WK?

I posted last week about my strange acting front end and forum users recommended changing out the fluid in the front and rear differentials as well as the transfer case. I noticed I need about 5 quarts of 75w140 to do both rear ends, but I can not find out what type of transfer case fluid I need to look for. I was hoping to stay away from the dealer and buy the fluid at a local auto parts store if possible. I've got the 05 5.7 Hemi with Quadra-Drive II that supposedly only needs about 2 quarts of fluid. Does the rear diff have a drain or will I have to pop the cover loose to drain it. All help is appreciated.

www.wkjeeps.com has all the specs and numbers on what fluids you need.

The tranfer case is probably the easiest to change out of all three. Seeing as all you have to do is open the drain plug, close it, and then fill the case back up via the fill hole, until the fluid reachs the top of the fill hole. SIMPLE.

Dont forget the friction modifier for the transfer cases, that you may have to go to the dealer for. Since WK jeeps strongly suggests the use of the mopar differential fluid and Nv245 transfer case fluid.

Hope this helps

You only need to buy 4 quarts of 75W-140 to do the front and rear diffs - but don't forget to get TWO bottles of the friction modifier additive at the dealer. One bottle goes in each diff. When filling the diffs, I drained (of course), then put the friction modifier in first, and then filled them until the fluid began to spill out of the fill hole.

For the transfer case, you have to use the fluid from the dealer for the NV245/247/249. I think I paid somewhere between $8 and $10 a quart for it when I changed my TC fluid. You DO NOT need to put friction modifier in the transfer case as someone posted above.

You will have to pop the cover on the rear diff to drain it - that is the easiest way.

Has anyone used anything that wasn't the official Mopar fluid in their NV245 transfer cases? I picked up some stuff Amsoil recommended and was going to put it in but don't want to mess stuff up. Never heard anything bad about anything Amsoil makes so what's the big deal?

If you've got the Amsoil ATH, it will work great in the Xfer case. That's the right stuff for the 249/ 247/ 245.

I changed both diffs and the tcase fluid last night, a pain since I didn't have a quart pump. I was able to attach a hose to the bottle and snake it through for the front diff. Back was no problem, popped the cover, wipped everything clean, applied RTV to cover, put cover back on and let it dry for a few hours then filled. The tcase was really difficult with out a pump (next time I will have one) kept filling a hose and puting it above the drive shaft to let it run into the fill hole. You only need 4 quarts of 75W-140 Synthetic (I used Royal Purple) and the 4oz of friction modifier for each diff (from dealer). I would only use the tcase fluid from the dealer (NV245), it is different than ATF4.

If its an NV245 you are going to have to visit the dealer. You will need 2 Qts @~$10 per Qt. Part # 05016796AB

DO NOT PUT ATF/ATF EQUVALENT IN THERE AS IT DOES NOT MEET THE OE FILL SPECS FOR THE NV245.

Friction modifier additive isn't needed when using Royal Purple. Or any product formulated with hypoid friction modifiers.

a suction gun can also be used to suck the old oil out of the diffs. its a lot easier than pulling the covers.

and for the xfer case. make sure to remove your fill plug first. it really sucks if you remove the drain plug first to find that the fill plug is stuck and you now cant get fluid back in.

On the XK, I had to go out and buy a 14mm hex socket to get the drain / fill plugs off. Also, for the fill plug, I had to take the hex socket apart to get the ratchet fitting out of the way. There is only a small amount of clearance between the plug and the cross member that the differential cover is mounted to. I used an open-end wrench on the hex fitting. It worked nicely.

Since the front differential cover is mounted, I opted to use the drain and fill plugs rather than take the front differential cover off. I am finding that the XK is very different than my prior 4.0L ZJ and my current WJ.

Also, I thought that the front differential required 2.5 ounces of friction modifier and not 4.0 ounces. I think that the rear requires 4.0 ounces. I have limited slips on both the WJ and XK. I use Mobil 1 differential fluids all of the way around.

Yes do NOT put ATF in there.

Go to the dealer - you need two bottles of the NV245/247/249 fluid.
