Towing 6'x12' UHaul trailer behind 2007 4.7L 4x4 Laredo Limited with Factory hitch

I'm trying to figure out how much I can pull behind my '07 Grand Cherokee 4.7L Laredo. I need to fill a 6 x 12 foot UHaul with household stuff from Vermont to California. What can I expect for weight limits and how much will it affect the gas mileage to the point I might as well just throw the stuff out and start over?

Earlier this year I towed a 7'x14' loaded trailer behind my old 2004 4.7GC. Mainly freeway with some high country for a distance of about 700 miles. Fuel consumption about 10mpg - bit better on the flat.

After I unloaded and unpacked some cartons that had not seen daylight for several years, I did ponder why I went to the expense of carting such stuff. My advice would be to do a 'hard' cull of your stuff and only take the really good gear preferably in a smaller trailer. My trailer was enclosed and quite high. It was supposed to be their 'streamlined model'. Glad I didn't get the non- streamlined version!

As long as you're not loading it with bricks it should be no problem at all, as long as you load most of the weight in front of the axle, and have it set level (correct drop on the hitch). I have towed 2 U-Haul trailers with my WK and for both it took a 6" drop hitch for it to tow level. So that gives you a good starting point, pick up a 6" drop draw bar and 2" ball.

Thanks all for the quick response. I wish my wife was willing to throw some of this s..t away as I'll be 6 feet under before any of it sees the light of day. Oh well, 10 MPG is awful, but hiring movers is more awful. What a great community and great help!!!!

Before you take off make sure the adjustable hitch that they use is tight and check the tire pressures. That adjustable hitch bangs and clunks more than one that fits the ball exactly so just be aware of that. If you're new to towing it could be a little concerning. There is normally some play in how the drawbar fits the receiver hitch on the Jeep and you may hear a bit of clunking from that now and then, but those U Haul couplers are noisy for sure. My boat trailer even with surge brakes is much quieter.

If your WK has the tow package it probably already has it, I know my 07 does. I added a B&M Supercooler to my 98 when I was using it for towing.

That is a long drive. You'll be lucky if you get 8 mpg towing that. You have some mountains on that route.

plus you might be better of buying a "used" motorcycle hauler trailer, as they are lower height (cab height) , better mileage, and just selling it when you get to Cali. Used trailers sell for about the same price you buy them for. good tires, trailer brakes, and bearings are important.

Trailers are easy to sell in Cali, you might even pre-sell it, and get paid to haul it there?

Wonder why the discrepancy?

EDIT:

Just realized 650# fits better at 10% of gross trailer.

Never even thought of this anytime I referenced wkjeeps for towing info.

My 05 owners manual states 720# for all 4.7's .
the 06 owners manual states 650# for all 4.7's both 2 an 4x4 .
what i find interesting is the 07 owners manual makes a distinction between a normal 4.7L/Automatic with tongue weight of 350# and 4.7L/Automatic
(w/Trailer Tow Group IV) - tongue weight of 650# .

Also , without the trailer tow group IV your only rated for 3500# total .

OP , if your not sure , you should get a build sheet either on line or from the dealer and make sure you have the trailer tow group IV.

If you have the Class IV tow hitch and you bought the vehicle new, you have the Trailer Tow Group IV.

If you bought it used, it's worth checking what you've got. 2007 is when the cost-cutting went into effect and Jeep started using a cheaper cooling fan on vehicles not shipping with the Class IV hitch (which is why the 2007 manual starts to distinguish between them).

Upgrading to the "tow group" if the previous owner didn't do it is as easy as walking up to the parts counter asking for the Mopar cooling fan upgrade.

Without the fan, you're rated at 350/3500 on either hitch. With it, you're at 650/6500 on the IV.

So, I purchased a 2008 XK Sport, 4.7...is that true for me as an XK owner as well? Cooling fan upgrade?

(I'm a very new owner, trying to figure out my towing situation for my boat.)

You can get it through email from the "Owners" section of the Jeep website.

P.S. It's free. The novelty of something free for your Jeep should be incentive enough!
