I had the same issue. If noise is coming from the front axle, take it to a different dealership and insist that they write on the svc paper, please check sway bar linkage and bushings. They replaced all these parts on mine and the problem is gone. The first dealership I tried said they could not duplicate the problem. You will notice they will not want to write that specifically on that paperwork, insist. That is what I did and it paid off. Good luck.

There are several posts of people with the same issue on the "other" forum out there. If coming from front axle, it is indeed the sway bar linkage and bushings. Mine runs like new now, no more klunking sound at all.

fair enough, will check sway bar linkage and report back. Thx for taking the time to convey your experience

And come to think of it, I do believe I heard the thump when I was stressing the swaybar. i.e. turning a corner and going over a bump.

Have in mind this was on a Commander and I am aware of it happening on the Commander.

I am taking my Commander in to the local dealer at 8 am and will specifically request to have the front sway bar linkage and bushings checked. It has not been making any noise lately, but it won't hurt to be sure.

UPDATE: Dealer said it was coming from the rear, and they tightened things up all around.

And I have not been hearing anything lately.

Has anyone heard about the supposed 1/2 million SUV recall by Chrysler? This may be what we're looking for as far as the remedy we really want.

Heard it on CNN news radio, but did not hear anything about Commanders.

Dodge door locks, and something else...

Of course, I don't know all the details, it was just a brief radio segment.

Lower Control Arm Bolts

Just a follow up on my lower control arm bolts backing out - and allowing the control arm to go back and forth about 2".

Just took the Commander into the dealership and told them about the problem, and they said:
1. no problem - you already fixed it.
2. we can't touch it (at least under warranty), you put in a Rocky Road lift.
3. we can perform an alignment for $385.

I kinda' expected them to tell me they wouldn't touch it, because I performed a lift (however mild). What I thought was irresponsible, was that those bolts were not touched - in any way, shape or form, during the installation of the lift - but they didn't really take that very seriously. They just wanted to get out of unreimbursed labor.

What I really DID expect them to do, was reset the setting of that lower A-arm back to factory. When their factory doesn't tighten bolts to spec torc settings - I don't think that I should be penalized for that. Do you? Don't really blame them about the rest of the labor - but if those bolts fell out at highway speeds - my family and myself could be dead. And, while I have grown quite fond of my family and myself, maybe they aren't. However, this problem may not be isolated to my Commander. I was wholly unimpressed with the dealership. I just thought they should report this Jeep. They said that was my responsibility - the service writer said "they don't know how"!!!

I also have this clunk noise coming from the front. If I followed the front sway bar would I beable to see if the bolts are loose. I really hate bringing in my Wk for service, esp when they say" we can't duplicate the problem." I'd rather fix it myself. Is there anything I should look for?
