Shuddering Jeep...????
Driving down the road my jeep will start shuddering.. When I pull off the road and come to a stop with my foot on the brake it will keep doing it.. Now If I turn it off and restart it, the shuddering goes away... It happens very radomly.. It seems to be happening more and more...
I've read the other thread about shuddering and mine seems different.. You cannot continue driving once it starts.. You must pull over and turn off the jeep and restart it... Anyone have any Ideas... I am thinking anything from a sensor to the torque converter... Thanks for everyones input.. ![]()

mine used to shudder a little bit, at random times. Happened after I got stuck in some deep water/mud. A month or so I got the oil/fluids changed it stop since. I think I had water in the tranny fluid, I would start with checking the fluids.
But the shudder wasnt to the point where you have to pull off the road... hopefully someone is better help.

When I had my 05 WK it did that between 40 to 45 mph on slight hill. The dealer claimed it was the torque converter kicking in and out. With this just cropping up I would expect that you need to have the fluid checked or changed in the tranny. If I remember correctly they had a water leak getting into the tranny and had to put some type of fix on the tranny casing for that. The symptoms seem similar to what your encountering. Good luck with this.

shuddering and vibrations
This seems to go in my direction:
Hi folks, I'm Harald , new to the side, new to the WK CRD but an ols guy when it comes to off road, SUV's and wrenching... I've bought a 2005 WK CRD a week ago, from a Jeep Chrsler dealer in Germany with a one year backup warranty.... When driving it over flat roads I sometimes feel a vibration in the drivetrain between 70kmh and about 100kmh. It feels as if you drive over a very rough road surface. That vibration comes and goes which is the reason that I didn't visit my dealer right away. After working in the car business for 20 and more years I know it's waisted time to visit them without a consistent problem. So I try to inverstigate a little more on my own. The vibration feels like an unbalanced driveshaft and the vibration stays also if I put it in N. What speaks against the driveshaft is that it happens only from time to time. The other thing I hear is also a slight bump from the front suspension when I drive over some potholes... could be a worn bushing or such. Is this something other WK drivers experienced?? Harald |

I forgot:
I don't think any fluid change will help in this situation. If you vibrations are close to the ones I experienced then this is something mechanical. I cannot imagine any torque converter failure that could lead to this. The strange thing is it happens only from time to time. And it comes and goes without me doing anything. Maybe I see more when I put it on the hoist the next days. Harald |

If it goes away when you turn off and then back on that sounds like an electronics problem to me. Input from a sensor going haywire or something, then when you turn off and back on it resets the sensor.

Don't think it's electronic.... the vibrations come and go on a single trip without stopping.
Up to date I cannot create the circumstances to get it to vibrate. As I am electronic engineer at Bosch Rexroth here in Germany I can say it doesn't behave like a sort of electronic problem..... but you never know..;-) |

Also another here is comparing a vibration to a vigerous shudder... Way different things...

I have an 05WK and just recently was having a huge shake coming from the front end. It was actually from my radiator fan and the housing that encased it had come loose and that was shaking it. Does it still vibrate when you pull over?? I found out that once my fan shut off, the shaking stopped. Might want to take a look, random, I know.

Mine had an issue when new. It would sputter, almost like fuel was cut off, then on two occasions after a cold start it would begin to misfire. Shutting over and restarting fixed. Dealer replaced accelerator pedal and EGR valve.
Probably not the same issue here, but my point is that there appears to be a gray area with these vehicles. The sensor or component is malfunctioning enough to cause a drive-ability issue but isn't far enough off to cause it to throw a code. I never had any codes on mine at all....and knock on wood....the problems have not returned. If you can't readily do something to reproduce the problem it will be very difficult to fix. The only way I can think is to have a data logger connected to the vehicle looking at as many different sensors as possible....then when you have the issue take a look at the data which will hopefully reveal where the fault is. If a MFR has problems with their vehicles throwing a lot of codes, they may set the ECU to allow a sensor to deviate a little more to prevent excessive warranty claims, in turn you may have a few cases where mysterious problems do not get solved. All of this is just my opinion and I have no hard data to back any of this up.

I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee Loredo 2004, it has the 4.0 6 cyclinfer engine in it and will also sputter while driving. Only it is intermitent. It happens after about 20 to 30 minutes of driving and then start to sputter and get worse over time. Also at time when i come to a stop it will die and then i have to restart it and put it in drive quickly and go. Anyone ever have this problem? I changed fuel filter, and a code p1296 came up and it was a map sensor which i replaced.

Mine did that!!! 05 HEMI.... anyways the culprit on mine was the Crankshaft Position Sensor.
The motor won't shudder real bad on acceleration and then sometimes would just die... $45 part at Chrysler 10mins to replace.... under motor in front of starter on the block 1 10mm bolt and 1 electrical connector |
