The underpinnings of the Commander are the same as (or very close to) the current Grand Cherokee (WK). Due to their similarities many aftermarket upgrades - intake, exhaust, lift kits, etc are available. Naturally, the price is similar as well - $ 30k US for a bare-bones V6 2WD model and it goes up fast from there.
The closest thing to your XJ is the KJ (Liberty), but you might also consider the 2007 Wrangler Unlimited (JK 4-door) once they become available in a few months.
IMO the only way to get decent fuel mileage in a WK or XK will be to wait until you can get one with a Mercedes diesel V6 - 19-20/26-27 (city/highway) instead of the 14-15/18-19 you would get with the V8.

what's wrong with you IH8MUD? Are you in the wrong forum?
jeepdude, the commander rides like a cadillac compared to your xj, but cost quote a bit. The commander could be a variable capable offroader, but not a lot of aftermarket stuff out there yet, give it a year or two. For the price, I wouldn't take it off road much, but for a daily driver it's great for everything except the mileage.
Black 03 sahara with some stuff.
I just purchased the Commander Limited 4x4 Hemi power about 3 weeks ago.
It is amazing. I went to the Hummer dealership and it was a tossed between that and the Commander. Overall, the Quadra Trac II is so much better off road.
You get so much more equipment and options for the price.
The ride is smooth, navigation is awesome, all feature and comfort is amazing.
I plan to get the Air Intake, 3" superlift and the exhaust system in a few weeks or when the exhaust kits comes out.
This is my second Jeep and I always had a Chrysler product. Good Stuff if you take care of it.
My wife's KJ is going to get replaced with probably a Commander over the Grand Cherokee. What interests me in the Commander is the size, yet it's not too big, plus what it will tow. Right now I'd want the HEMI, but I'm not in a rush to buy, so I think I'll wait for the diesel. Plus I've got a truck stop near me, and diesel there is usually right around the price of unleaded.
I know the Grand Cherokee is getting the diesel in '07, but will the Commander as well?
