Shift solenoid C?

so on my way home from work tonight my tranny went into limp mode (stuck under 3rd gear) and the trouble code is a shift solenoid C. Can anyone tell me what that means? this has happened before but i just turned off the car, turned it back on and everything ran fine? any help would be appreciated

Mike

Sounds like you may be at the beginning of a solenoid pack malfunction in the 545RFE transmission. It's fairly common (I wouldn't call it normal though), most, usually after lots of miles. The pack has 6 solenoids on it, the temp. sensor, and I don't know what else. Some have found them for under $300 and changed it themselves (it's located above the valvebody), and others have paid the stealer over $1000 for the same job. It could be, at this point, that the solenoid is only sticking, since you can shut it off and it starts working upon restart. Good luck and keep us posted.

Gunner, yes, the valve body is inside the pan. I've not had the misfortune of doing this job (and hope I never do), but there are several on these forums that have....some with very little transmission experience. Apparently it's not that difficult to do. You may want to do a search on changing the pack for a 545RFE transmission.

Paroxysym, the solenoid pack, using commands from the Transmission Control Module (TCM), is what controls all the upshifts/downshifts.

90grand, would this throw a CEL if one of the solenoids were failing? would that come up on a diagnostic if you had it done?

Yes, it should throw one or more codes. I am sure that's how gunner knew it was the "C" Solenoid. You do not need to drop the trans. to do this fix....just the pan. From what I understand, all you'll need is new ATF+4 fluid (~8 qts.), both filters (ask about the caution when installing the main filter), a new solenoid pack, an inch lb. and maybe a ft. lb. torque wrench and, most of all, patience.

Sorry! Damn thing won't let me remove the shout (bold face). Have you done the obvious first.....check the fluid level and condition? Especially looking for low fluid level, or burnt smell. Also, some have had split sides on main filter, and the return (spin on) filters for the 05's and some of the 06's had a TSB on them.

Possible causes
- Shorted or open circuit within transmission control module (TCM)
- Failure of transmission control module
Help with this

Tech notes
Since the P0700 is just and informative code, check the TCM for more codes to resolve the problem.
Help with this

Symptoms
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Driveability problems
- Transmission shifting problems

P0700 Description
The Transmission Control Module (TCM) monitors the malfunction of sensors and actuators relating to transmission control. When the TCM detects a malfunction with the control, a signal is send to the Engine Control Module (ECM) to trigger the Engine Light or Service Engine Soon light. The ECM stores the P0700 code and it means the TCM detected a malfunction with the transmission controls.
