Self Diagnostics

Hello all! I'm new to the forum, and had a quick question. I've had a 2005 WK with the 4.7, QTII, and 55K miles for a little while now, and the Service 4WD System light flashed up. I've read through several threads on the topic, and plan on taking it to the dealer if necessary.

My question however is whether or not the WKs have a self diagnostic mode where they will put the codes up on the display on the dash. I did a search and couldn't find anything. A friend of mine had a Cougar back in the day with a similar type display and with a certain sequence it would "boot up" in diagnostic mode showing engine rpms, DTCs, etc. I was wondering if my Jeep had this or if I would need to take it to an auto parts store or the dealer to see if it is throwing any DTCs.

The vehicle runs fine, but has intermittently started throwing up the Service 4WD System at random times, and I want to know if it is throwing a DTC or not so I can explore the flash option per the TSB.

Any information would be most helpful!

it MIGHT actually need service then, because i believe scheduled maintenance for the 4x4 system is every 75k miles.

Autozone or some place like that should be able to pull any codes for you... but you can pull then up by yourself on the evic by going from Off-On-Off-On-Off-On with the key. Takes a while but you'll get it.

This is for a commander but its the same thing:

Codes are listed here: Jeep Grand Cherokee WK - Diagnostic Trouble Codes if you get any on the key trick. The top level codes are the ones that will display. Chrysler system has multiple trouble code levels and not all display in the EVIC.

The major ones do and that will get you started. If the MIL light is steady, it's OK to drive and should be looked soon. Flashing MIL is more urgent. Generally, 3 good "trips" and the MIL will reset, but trouble codes remain in memory.

One interesting common phenomenon lately is the '05 WK OEM batteries failing and throwing out wierd codes like this. If you go to Auto Zone, Advance Auto, or Sears, they can do a free battery capacity test to see if your battery is on the way out (presuming it is original). If you know that the battery is good or replaced recently, disregard.

That is exactly what I was looking for thanks.

No DTCs, and the MIL was never on before, I just thought it was possible that the S4WDS message came up and stored a code without flashing the MIL.

I will definitely get the battery checked.

Outside of getting the battery checked, with no DTCs does it sound like it probably just needs to be flashed?

There is a software update to get rid of the service 4wd light. I got mine done at a small town dealership for $40. I've had other shops want to charge over $100.
