Replace Leaking Injector Seal Step by Step - CRD

So... I noticed a new noise today that has probably been going on for a week or two without my notice. The wife complained about the heavy oily smell and I just thought she was smelling my EHM fumes.

Today I was poking around and notice oil around the #1 injector and heard the swishing shound of what must be a small compression leak. Here is a video of the noise. What do you think?

** NOTE ** See post #15 to read the step by step guide to repair this problem

I'd say it's a bad injector seal. Good thing you noticed it early, I've heard they can make quite the mess if left to leak for too long!

At least the seal is cheap! 99 cents!

does sound like a seal leak. id consider replacing all the seals because you can bet if one is bad they will all fail fairly soon

I disagree. Based on everything I've read it's pretty much a crapshoot when and IF they even will ever fail. I'd only disturb as much as necessary IMO. Worked out good for me the past 180k miles.

My personal preference is to just fixed whats broken, in most cases. I take that approach to glow plugs for example. So I'll just deal with the one, and then fix the others as they go.

I called the dealer parts dept. and they had NO CLUE what I was talking about. After quite a while, they finally said that they could order the bolt and the seal ring for the bottom but had no listing for the other rubber o-ring that is needed for the return line.

So.... I ordered a set online and will have to wait for them to arrive.

Me too, was getting an oil smell and this morning discovered the black gunk on the #3 injector.
Guess I'll be ordering seals and bolts now.

The injector rubber o-ring is MB part A0000780580
One of mine I had to cut the base a little, someone on here loaned me their cutting tool.
For the copper o-ring there is also a Honda part that fits, it is a little thicker. Some of the sprinter guys have been using it.
Soak it over night with injector cleaner.. it comes out easier that way. They usually come out by hand.

I pulled my injector today. It took me most of the day to pull it and clean up the mess, after a late start. It was caked really bad with the black death gunk. I'm ready to put it all back together but I just ran out of daylight and ran out of steam so I'll finish it tomorrow. I had a very hard time getting the injector out. I'll tell you how I did it in my write up. Hope to have it posted late tomorrow or Saturday for sure. I cheated for sure.

YES!! I stumbled upon the same deal and purchased it too. They shipped it right away and it arrived sooner than I expected. Highly recommended.

On another note, I wanted to see what the dealer would charge for the necessary stuff. I called them up and they found the bolt and the washer but had neither in stock. They could not even find the o-ring for the return line and wanted to sell me the whole line. I don't remember the price of the washer, it was more than a dollar, but the bolt was $11.00. I hung up and ordered the above deal.

I completed my repair today and will post the writeup soon. In the mean time you can take a look at the 17 second video of the repair and compare the sound that it makes now with the previous video of the faulty seal.
