Refinishing stock aluminum rims

Hey guys,

I have been looking into getting my rims powder coated matte black. I have a 2009 grand Cherokee Laredo and I believe that the stock rims are an aluminum alloy. I have been told that I need to get them sandblasted before the powder goes on, but I have read that regular sandblasting can damage aluminum rims. Does anybody have experience doing this, any success stories out there? I considered plastic dipping them but I want it to look professional.

Thanks for the input!

Sand would be a little aggressive. Glass bead, walnut shells or some other more mild media would be a good bet.

Well hello fellow Michigander! Check out the MI-XK and WK facebook group
There are places around, one in Spring Lake I believe that will 'sand' blaster and powder coat wheels. I can't think of the name of the place off the top of my head. I think most places that powder coat can also prep the metal with sand blaster or other similar ways.

Why hello!

The shop that I work at right now actually just put up a powder coat paint line, so I can get the rims painted for nothing. However, I need to find a place that will blast them first before paint.

I will definitely check out that Facebook page!
