Way to go Dasko. Thanks for ruining it for all of us. This is why we can't have nice things. xD!!

But seriously, I hope you're okay.

The issue is the transfer case shifting into neutral by itself, so QTII and QDII.

Sure here's what happened:

My wk nearly killed me Saturday morning. Called Chrysler around noon and what do ya know 30 minutes later the recall for almost 700,000 wks was released to the press.

What happened: I parked it at my buddy's house in his driveway which is, for lack of better words jeep worthy. It was on an incline when I parked it so I put the emergency break on. Later that night his wife asked me to turn it on so she could see. I opened the door and turned it on while standing outside. When I turned the jeep on it jumped from park to reverse and red lined dragging me between the door and the frame for about 40 feet before I was able to bail. It continued to accelerate for another 250 feet or so before it came to a stop on it's own somehow. Once I got up I went to check it out. It was still in PARK and the emergency brake was still engaged. I cut it off immediately and left it there.

I purchased the wk for the fact that they are safe amongst other reasons and now I no longer have that confidence in it to drive myself much less put my daughter into. Therefore I will be trading it in tomorrow for something different. Which is a shame because I just mounted my light bar, extra fogs and got new tires.

Wow, that amazing, happy to hear no one was hurt.
Did you use the remote to start it?
I hope jeep is giving you deal on your vehicle?

This incident sounds nothing like the recall.

The recall is for the transfer cases shifting into neutral which allows the vehicle to roll even if the transmission is in park. It doesn't say anything at all about the vehicle jumping into reverse and driving itself. Sounds like you have a different problem altogether.

Correct !

Plus I just called Chrysler, provided them with the VIN and been told that the recall is not applicable for my Jeep. So I asked to what vehicle does it apply to and was told that it varies from one to another ... only VIN related and not platform related.

Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) announced a safety recall on certain 2005 - 2010 model year (WK) Jeep Grand Cherokee and (XK) Jeep Commander vehicles equipped with a Quadra-Drive II or Quadra-Trac II four wheel drive system.
Some of the above vehicles may experience a transfer case actuator encoder electrical failure that results in unintentional transfer case shifting into or through the neutral position.
NOTE: These vehicles are equipped with a NV245 transfer case that is part of the automatic four wheel drive system. The transfer case shifts into and out of four wheel drive modes and ranges automatically or based on driver inputs.
Chrysler will conduct a voluntary safety recall on all affected vehicles to reprogram the Final Drive Controller Module (FDCM) with new software. The four wheel drive system will then be function tested. Vehicles found with an inoperative transfer case actuator will also have the actuator replaced.

Auto companies must report the intent to recall to NHTSA within five (5) days of the decision. It takes some time to determine affected VIN lists, engineer, manufacture and transport parts to the dealers, create labor procedures, and to write and send customer letters via U.S. Postal Service.
NHTSA notifications are not VIN-specific. The Manufacturer's Defect Information Report contains an estimated launch date for the recall.

Info from www.safercar.gov website:
Report Receipt Date: MAY 07, 2013
NHTSA Campaign Number: 13V175000
Component(s): ELECTRICAL SYSTEM , POWER TRAIN
Manufacturer: Chrysler Group LLC
SUMMARY:
Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, through March 9, 2010; and 2006-2010 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, through March 10, 2010. A transfer case electrical failure may result in an unintentional shifting of the transfer case into the neutral position.
CONSEQUENCE:
If the vehicle shifts into neutral, it may roll away increasing the risk of a crash or personal injury.
REMEDY:
Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the final drive controller which governs the transfer case, with new software, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in June 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N23.
NOTES:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
