Which rear end/gearing

Have a 2006 jeep commander 2wd, 4.7 liter v8
Rear end is making a whirling sound coming from the pinion. Stealer ship agrees it sounds like its pinion noise but say they wouldn't do nothing about it??? But the boss aka wife is getting annoyed with the sound especially up on hwy speeds.
My question is what rear end do I have and is there a way to tell what gearing it has without opening it up. Was 2wd made with a standard gearing?
Thanks
