Rack & Pinion problem

OK so I actually own an 02 WJ. My buddy has a 09 WK with a leaking rack and pinion. So today we started with yanking out the old one and putting in the new one. Really it wasn't that bad to remove. And no you do not have to remove the diff to get out the rack and pinion IF you have a friend to help push the diff out of the way to slide the R&P. Anyways. the first R&P the steering shaft knuckle wouldnt fit onto the r&p. Dang it! Ok so we take it off and find it is not the right rack. So we go get another one. SAME issue. except this time the knuckle matches the profile of the shaft on the r&p but it just would not go on.
Question: Are there more than one size shaft for the r&p or what? Because we are at a lose. The shaft he needs has beveled edges on the side opposite of the cut out side for the bolt. If that makes any sense please help. we took this out for the three times today. And now his Jeep sits helplessly in the driveway on jack stands.
