HI folks I got a 2009 overland. Quick question, When I'm going to shift the vehicle to park it normally makes a "click" noise goes in park done and done. Lately ill shift to park, it'll engage but not click and therefore the key won't release. All I have to do is shift it back and then forward 1-2 more times it'll click and I'm good. Just wondering why this may be? No check lights nothing wrong just slightly annoying. It has been extremely cold but idk why that would effect it. Any help is appreciated. Andrew

meh....that symptom you describe is wrong in itself. Has the transmission been serviced? Might be time to drain it, new filters, refill - see if the problem persists.

Strange. It should definitely shift into park without issue. Annoying aside, something in the transmission isn't operating properly.

The contacts in the shifter get dirty and act up. Search for shifter contacts. Should be a writeup.

It actual engages park but it won't idk go far enough to allow the key to release? It's definitely in park but my key won't come out. It's a hit and miss thing sometimes it's fine sometimes it takes two times. I'll look at that writeup as well.

Edit: after reading the write up it seems everyone there were having actual codes thrown and I'm not. Definitely something easy I can do just to clean up the bezel itself I suppose I'll see if the problem persists and if it does I can try and clean it from there.

Ok, I misunderstood. Still strange though. Hit & miss - those are frustrating.

These jeeps still have mechanical linkage so the trans may be in park but the shifter isnt telling the win module (ignition) to release the key.

Ya Exactly. Is functionally everything is fine. It just takes someone a few times to go back and forth to park to get that click noise that allows the key to be taken out. Otherwise my key is just locked in position and in park.

Just wanted to see if any other people had that issue. Cleaning could solve it though as well.

Any idea on how to solve that?

Sweet. Thanks. Looks like a decent amount of work for something so silly but it's better then spending $500 on module. Great info thank you for the quick responses.

Update:
It has been normal weather aka not -20 for the last few week or so. Roughly 20-40 degrees out. It has not once had this issue since getting to a more normal temperature.

Sounds either shifter or linkage related. Why not pop the console and first clean out the shifter area. A few dabs of light oil/grease on all contact/moving points. Then wait a week or so. If you get really ambitious, then go cleaning/re-lubing the linkage on the transmission. Could be dirty/lack of lube, and in turn the cold weather had it binding slightly.
