Omelet's Headlamp Project!

This write up is for my main man AJ!

I have wanted to upgrade to the 08+ headlamps for sometime now, I just had more important thing to spend my money and time on. I have been wanting to paint my stock ones to match my khaki WK, but knowing that I was going to be doing this upgrade I couldn't bring myself to waist time on the ones I would be pulling off. A few months ago I finally decided to make the switch!

First I scored an OEM housing off ebay for $50! It had a broken tab, but was in working condition. So for $50 I got a good ballast, OEM projector, and a housing to practice on. I pulled it apart and started playing with different ideas.

My goal was to accentuate the circular headlights that are one of the iconic Jeep traits. At the same time color match the lamps to the Jeep to make them look like they belong. One of the things that always bugged me about Jeep, as apposed to other companies, was the one lamp for all colors idea. I like that some other companies will take the time and money to have a specific color matched lamp for each vehicle.

Anyways, here is the the reflector before I did anything to it:

I pulled the side marker off and started taping. Then I gave it a quick sand to ruff it up.

I didn't care to do a thorough sand job since this is just a practice run. At this point I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with the side markers, so I left it alone. Next was paint!

I sprayed it with a couple coats of primer, base coat, and then clear. Before the clear dried completely I pulled off all the tape to make the easier and the lines a little cleaner. After it was dry I popped the side markers back on and brought it out in the sun.

I liked the outcome! Next was to get my real lamps and work out my other ideas...

As I was looking around for some headlamps I decided to forget looking for OEM lamps and instead get a set of aftermarket ones. All the OEM ones I was finding were either too expensive or had broken tabs. I found a set of new aftermarket lamps on eBay from AM AutoParts for $150 shipped so I jumped on them. I was quite excited when they came a week later until I opened the boxes to find that they were the non HID headlamps After a couple emails back and forth they sent me an electronic shipping label so I could send them back. Unfortunately they wouldn't let me exchange them for the HID ones. So instead I paid $100 more for them to send me the right ones. Which really isn't too bad, $250 shipped for the 08+ HID headlamps.

Ok, originally wanted to do halos. However, after seeing way too many these days I decided to go a different route. So my new plan was to instal a strip of them like so:

After thinking about it for a bit and posting up my idea on JG to get some feedback I decided to go for it. I wasn't sure it was going to look good or be a good idea for an off road Jeep. Sure that would look sweet on a street Jeep, but I had doubts. I figured after getting everything installed I could always disconnect them if I didn't like it.

I searched around and found some white/amber flashback strips. I figured this way I could tie them into the turn signal for a little more custom look! After I got them I did a quick mock up to see if I liked it:

Amber:

Now that I had all the plans worked out it was time to do it for real! Let the baking begin!!!

I baked them for 10min intervals at about 225. These aftermarket ones came apart like butter compared to the OEM ones! The sealer that came on these was a lot softer then the stuff the factory uses. I think I put the OEM lamp in the oven 6-7 times before I got it all the way apart. These I only had to put in twice! All the excess glue peels off fairly easy too.

Once I taped everything off and started sanding I found out that they used clear plastic where as the OEM was black. Just an observation!

I also taped the back side openings in case of over spray!

After a thorough sanding I blew it off and wiped it all down with alcohol to prep for paint. After 2 coats of adhesion promoter:
