Oducks build thread

Well, I figure it's about time that I start a build thread. I'll start at the beginning.

Pre-Jeep

I had been driving around in a 2004 Acura TSX, a great car and ton of fun to drive. Problem was that I landed a job with the University geology department and needed a vehicle that could get me through logging roads in the Northwest rain. Here are a couple of pics of the Acura:

Jeep!

I ended up buying a 2005 WK 3.7 Laredo bare bones stock. It had 94,000 miles and seemed to be in good shape minus a leaky water pump and a F***d up rear hitch bezel (or lack of bezel) Here are some pics of the day I brought it home.

The first things I did were to throw on my Yakima board racks and slap an O on the back. In the pictures you can see the oddly positioned hitch. The hitch itself is centered but the cutout wasn't. The next thing I did was order the Mopar fog lights. Unfortunately I dont have any pics of the instal, but It's pretty straightforward and easy to do. Quite a lot of time went by before I did anything else, but next up was some HID fogs. At first I had 3000K, went to 6000K and have since gone back to 3000K. Following the HID's was an upgraded stereo. I had gotten so used to having navi in the Acura that I really missed it in the Jeep. I ended up ordering one of the no name chinese units of Ebay, which surprisingly has held up really well. Eventually I'll pay to get a better unit but as long as this one is working I don't really see the need.

Somewhere along the way I replaced the HVAC bulbs because most of them were out. unfortunately some of the other ones are out now, so I think I'll be going the led route soon. Drove up to Seattle to see my girlfriend and ended up in a freak snowstorm. Glad I had 4x4 or I wouldn't have made it home!

Next up were some performance mods, at least sort of. I ordered a K&N cai and Magnaflow 50 series muffler. Installed the K&N myself and had my local shop do the muffler. Added in about 1.5 to 2 feet of stainless steel pipe.

As you can probably tell from the pictures I ended up scoring a brand new set of Dunlop Grandtrek AT20 tires for 100 bucks. My Uncle was at an America's Tire in California and said that a guy came in with a just off the lot tacoma and wanted bigger tires. He was going to give the tires to the company for free so my uncle jumped on the opportunity. He was heading up to Oregon anyway so he threw them in the van and drove them up. They are not a tire I would buy, buy again or recommend but they aren't terrible for a hundred bucks. Soon they'll be replaced though.

Anyway a little bit later I grabbed a Rola rack and plasti dipped the grill and emblems

A few days later I did the expanded metal grill mod (A great excuse to buy a Dremel!) I painted the metal with flat black rustoleum, but am thinking about changing it to silver. I haven't decided yet but I'll probably end up doing it just to see how it looks.

What was the cost to get the muffler installed?

The we had a crazy freak snow storm in Eugene! Woke up to about 7 inches (in some parts of town) on the ground, which was shocking because there was no forecast of anything of the sort. Sure was fun though, made me realize that these Dunlop tires really suck in the snow though.

I also realized during this storm that I really needed to do something about the ride height. I was dragging the skids through the snow! I don't have a picture but the space between the fan and the front of the engine was packed full of snow.

I scored a sweet set of Spidertrax 1.5 spacers off of a fello Jeepforum member, through them on and called it quits for a while....about a month. I realized that on hard bumps the tires were rubbing the plastic covering of the pinchweld, so I went ahead and did the mod. Of course I forgot to take any pictures but I'm sure you all know more than enough about it already. After saving up for a while I made some big purchases. Ordered the F150 Monroe load levelers, Bilstein HD struts (Thanks Kolak!), new sway bar bushings and end links, and a Rough Country 2" lift. I couldn't wait for it all to arrive! After lurking the forum for a while I decided that I wanted to do all the work myself. I had never attempted anything as complicated before on the Jeep, or any other car, but figured that I had a week of free time so why not! I picked up the tools as I needed them and used my girlfriends 235CI as a parts car.

First up was the rears. (They lulled me into a false sense of security! The back is easy!)

Of course after I did the rears the weather turned worse...rained on me the entire rest of the build. I got used to being soaking wet and cold though, and luckily being underneath the WK means that less rain was falling directly on me.

It took me about 2 1/2 days total to get the front done, but I was taking it slow and learning a lot along the way. The part that gave me the most trouble was the lower strut mount bolt. I got one side out eventually but the drivers side would not budge. Ended up following the suggestion of some members (Thanks guys!) and removed the uca and slid the strut out that way. Went ahead and replaced the sway bar links while I was in the area, and plasti-dipped the wheels while they were off the truck.

I had my local shop take the springs off the old struts and put them on the new ones because I didn't feel like risking my life. I hear those springs cary quite some potential energy and I'm not sure how much I trust the spring compressors that Oreilly's rents. Anyway it's an excuse to use the Bimmer some more.

Four days, a bunch of bruises and a couple scars later...

It's done! Finished up putting everything back together today and MAN what a difference! I haven't taken any measurements yet but will tomorrow. Also sorry about the poor photos it was getting dark and I was using my phone. Soon I'll go out on a proper photo shoot. Tomorrow morning I'm heading to Firestone to get the lifetime alignment done!

I think I ended up paying about 125 for the install and the pipe.
