Noise at cold startup?

It has been -35 to -40 here off and on this winter. This is my 1st winter with the WK with a hemi. All fluids are topped up and current. But when I start her up after sitting overnight it makes a loud whinning sound that goes away after a couple of minutes. It only makes the noise after sitting overnight when its really cold.
Should I be concerned?

Wow , nice to see someone else from the area round here . Sounds like the power steeing pump . mine started doing that this year when i ran low on fluid ( guess i have a small leak to find in spring) . I topped up the fluid and it's better , but still makes the noise after the really cold nights . Start it with the key and turn the steering wheel when it makes the noise . If the noise changes or goes away , then that's your problem .

I'd go with PS pump as well. I've never had temps that low, but have been in double digit negatives. Definitely noticed stiff power steering and can see the pump cavitating some as the fluid is too thick to flow properly at first.

A change of the fluid would likely help some.

There's a redesigned reservoir available for just this problem on '05 and '06 Hemis:

CRD PS pump whining noise

Is your Hemi equipped with an hydraulic fan ?? ... I'm wondering if this is also an issue with the crd base model.
Mine is a crd (hydraulic fan) and is doing that PS whining noise after cold start up. It is low on fluid for some reason and fan is spinning very very slowly.

Mine does have the hydraulic fan. I thought the fan hydraulics were powered thru the Power Steering pump as well?

My CRD does that when cold. I think it is just cold fluid trying to go through the pump.

You are correct , The Power steering pump supplies the cooling fan .

ALL Hemi and CRD equiped WKs have the hydraulic cooling fan .
There is a flow control valve on the fan that opens and closes based on the engines various cooling needs and can make the fan turn anywhere from 150 rpm - 3000 rpm .
Keep that resevoir filled with the mopar only fluid , otherwise you stand a chance of getting too low and cavitating (getting air in) the pump .

Merry Christmas to All !

Good write up!
Filled her up with the mopar PS stuff, noise is almost disapeared or is barely audible and the fan is back on spining ... Gotta be carefull with the fingers folks, hydraulic fan eats everything on its way. Humm maybe I have a small leak somewhere I'll keep an eye on the reservoire until spring is back.

Merry christmas guys!

Thanks.

My 05 4.7 does this on cold mornings. I just attribute it to the fact that Jeeps hate the cold weather lol. It goes away after the revs settle down.

Your belts are cold and contracted hence why they make the noise. After they turn a couple times and stretch back out the noise goes way. Mine does it all the time in the winter. Has a brand new power steering pump and rack in it.

Always cold here in canada lol.

Its definitely the reservoir. I followed the tsb and mine hasn't made the sound since.. Changed it with radiator/waterpump. Better access
