Nag1 problems

Hey all I'm new to the forums here. I'm having some issues with the Nag1 tranny in a friends Grand Cherokee. It's a 2006 3.7 auto 4x4. Apparently it's had a slow fluid leak from the 13 pin connector and/or dipstick tube for awhile now that she was unaware of. Thursday she was driving home from work and it had a meltdown. I just drained and filled the fluid and swapped the filter. It still won't go into gear though. It makes a weird clicking/grinding sound when I try to put it into reverse. Almost like plastic gears jumping teeth. There's no noise at all when trying to go to drive but it won't engage either gear. I've done a bunch of reading and I know these trannys are very picky with fluid levels and all that. Is there an electronic module that tells it to engage gears that goes bad on these things? Any help is appreciated.

I would take it to a shop and have it serviced, you probably did some internal damage with running it low on fluid like that. Nothing much we can do over the internet. Can you read the DTC's from the transmission? With what you did I am sure there are several. The TCM module and valve body controls the transmission. You can see the valve body when you pull the filter off. It's only a dozen or so bolts to pull out the valve body.

I haven't pulled the codes on it yet but I can. I figured if it was an electronic module it would throw a CEL. I'd take it to a shop but she's on a budget so I'm trying to narrow down the culprit and hopefully fix it on the cheap. Yesterday after I filled it it made the weird grinding when going into reverse from park. Then when I switched it back into park it kept making the grinding noise. I had to switch from reverse to park a few times before it stopped. It doesn't sound like gears grinding though. I'll pull the codes on it and see what it says.

Transmission codes won't always throw a CEL. CEL is only required if it effects emissions.

I checked the engine codes and the DTC codes tonight and there are none. I'm guessing my only option right now is to pick up a used tranny since I don't have the special tools to rebuild this one.
