in motion "fix" for REC navi...

so im lookin to buy an 05 WK w/ the factory navigation system.

clearly, its annoying that you (or your passenger) cant enter address information while the car is moving. ive seen a writeup (link below) for a "fix" to this issue.

has anyone done this and does anyone know if it works with the newest versions of the navi software?

This hack works great on the newer REC I added into my '07 GC, which has the latest AF version of the navigation disc. You need to make sure to use the correct hack for your version of the nav disk (AD,AE,AF, etc).

I could not apply the hack to the older REC unit in my 2004 Durango, because that unit can't read a burned DVD. According to lots of forums, the older REC radios are finicky about reading recordable DVD's. I installed the hack with no issues using a Verbatim DVD-DL in my '07 GC, but my older REC wouldn't read that or any other DVD-DL I tried to burn with the hack- I turned lots of DVD's into expensive coasters.

You can find people on the LX (Charger, 300 and Magnum) forums that are selling their hacked discs, or if you make a post about wanting to purchase one people will PM you. You want to make sure whatever disc you get that it was burned correctly and the correct discs were used (Verbatim discs like airportdave said) because if it wasn't done correctly and something doesn't work, once the system has updated to a more recent disc you can not go back to a previous version disc.

any ideas where to get hack for the newer discs?

also, when you mention your "old" REC, was this the same old unit that could fit in the 99-04 WJ?

i purchased an AF dvd and am going to try the hack sometime soon i hope.

No, that unit is the RB1 I believe.

The "old REC" is the one that's found in the earlier WKs. The new RECs have MyGig and more bells and whistles. I believe they first came out in 2007. I could be way off on the year though.

I really want to do this hack, but the thought of turning my REC into a $1,000 useless brick will keep me from doing so.

When I was referring to an "older" REC unit, I was referrring to an older version/model of the REC, not the RB1, which is an older radio that fits pre-2004 Mopars. Like the navigation software, the REC radios have gone through several updates since they were first introduced in 2004, the most notable improvement on newer units being a much stouter joystick, which were prone to breakage in the earlier models. If you look on the back of the REC unit, it will have a model number- the higher the last letter, the newer the unit- I think that P56038646AM is the latest model. The one in my '07 GC is an AL unit (reads burned discs fine), and the older one in my Durango that can't read burned discs has like an AD suffix, or something like that.

The latest DVD version for the REC is version AF- here's the link to the latest in-motion update forum: http://www.carhack.org/forum/index.php?topic=81.0

Here's a pic of the RB1- a great radio I had in my old 1999 Intrepid:

There's also a difference in the buttons. The 07 unit that I have in my WK doesn't have a mute button, instead it has a time button, where as the 06 unit on our Charger has the mute button where my time button is. Not to mention the 07 units have the plug in the back for a rear camera or the Lock Pick device which also does the same thing as the hacked discs with other options too.

The MyGig isn't an REC, it's either RER, REN, or REU I believe.

As usual this site has a lot of helpful information about part numbers and such for the units and even for the Nav discs:

ive read through the WKjeeps site and can see that the unit itself has been superceeded several times included the joystick upgrade mentioned above.

the WK im looking at has an in-service date of 1/31/05, so i would assume its a very early 05 model (interestingly, only 18k miles though) and has the AI nav unit. does anyone know if the earlier units can be hacked with the new software?

I'm pretty sure it can. I was going to buy one from a guy with an 05 Magnum and he had the most recent hacked disc, he provided pictures of it working and everything, I decided against it though because I wanted the revised joystick.

There is an in-motion patch available for both the RB1 & REC.

The hack will work on any REC - regardless of age - as long as you find a brand of DVDR that it can read. Alternatively, you can pull the map database out of the image which will allow you to burn to a CDR (they'll read almost any CDR) which you can use to patch the firmware. Obviously, you'll have to put your original DVD back in after applying the hack via CD, since you removed the map db's to make the image small enough for the CD.
