Most Reliable Year WK

Hello All,

I've been looking at several Grand Cherokee Overland's that I've been wanting to purchase. Most are between 50K - 80K in mileage depending on year, etc. I know a lot of electronics were added in 2008 (HIDs, Hill Control, New NAV Radio, Electronic Instrument Cluster, infrared key fob, etc.).

I do like the look of all the model years and particularly like the HID headlamps however I don't want to incur expensive "problems" either since I do keep my vehicles upwards of 200K and for the most part do all of my own maintenance and fluid changes.

I have an inside mechanic at a pretty large Chrysler dealer in Milwaukee, WI., that tells me the best year of these was 2007 (before the upgrades made in 2008).

Checking with the forum to see if everyone that owns these see's any trends that lean towards this or if the 08 - 09 models can be just as reliable / unreliable as the 06 - 07's (I'm avoiding the 05 & 10's since there was no Overland trim made those years....)

I think the opinion here is that 2008 had some good changes...exterior and interior.

Some mechanics are great and others are exceptional, but on the other hand some are complete morons.

Just because someone works at a dealership, doesn't put them into a particiluar catagory.

Most of the "bugs" or problems with the 2007 were fixed with the 2008, but the 2008 still has some open issues.
There will be some 2007's that are better than some 2008's, but in general the 2008 is a better year, and the 2014 maybe an even better year.

I would definitely go with the 2008 or later.
I agree that if you need to fix some of the things like HID's or My Gig they are expensive.
But many of the features added like 110 ac or Hill assist are not expensive to fix or do not even need to be fixed and not all 2008 have the more expensive features like HID's or My Gig.
I have over 150,000 on mine and everything is still working.

I know 2008 still have the same version Hemi as the earlier years (introducing the VVT engine in 2009) so mechanically it seems 08 not much has changed outside of the interior / new grill / headlamps....any others can chime in. I have noticed that the 07's due demand less coin on the used market so from a value perspective they're easier on the wallet than 08 - up (at least in Overland trim....).

The 4.7 also got an upgrade in late 07(?)........definately 08.

I like my 07, I don't see many of these 07 problems? Except for maybe the Crank sensor.

2007 limited crd 2wd, 3.07 ratio, GDE eco tune, dpf delete, BuilderBill valve body

WOW that's kind of weird I was told the exact opposite, and it made sense to me. What ever bugs the earlier models had were mostly taken care of by 08-10, and with the exterior-interior upgrades it was a no brainer. Either way you go I haven't hears a lot of horror stories about them good luck.

I've had my 07 CRD for one year & 10K miles now, and after replacing a few things that were wearing out when I got it (ex: battery), it's been super-reliable. The only thing I see about the 08 that I like better is the placement of the fog lights (they are ridiculously high in the 05 - 07 models)

My 97 ZJ went to 167K miles before it's death. Hopefully the WK will surpass that.....

Hater I personally like the look of the 05-07 better...looks more aggressive in my opinion. Eh different taste I guess.

call me old school but I always felt that fog lights should be as low to the ground as possible. It's not that they look bad, but my WK fogs are at the same height as my Jetta headlamps. I use the fogs for driving lights and I plan to hang some additional fogs down near the air dam.

Admittedly this has nothing to do with the reliability question....

I have an 07 WK Hemi that I bought when it was 2 yrs old and had 25K miles on it, now it has 61K miles. So far all I have done is replace the battery and brake pads. I have to fix the cracking seat bottom side bolster, but that's it. Even changed the Hemi spark plugs myself (all 16!) and it runs great. It is truely my favorite vehicle in 41 years of driving. Fun, fast and not too expensive. I also kept my old 98 ZJ 4.0 as a back up.....
However, even as complex as the 07 is, I have had less trouble with it than I did with the ZJ at the same age and mileage...

The 2005 was a finished product IMO, love my loaded 4.7 Laredo. It was low mileage and dealer maintained Jeep and ultimately thats whats important. A used a vehicle is a product of its childhood.
