Mopar 75w140... Unicorn Blood

I am sorry, but $33 a quart is a wee bit ridiculous. Plus the cost of the friction modifier (QDII). I have a question about my alternatives:

There are other choices in synthetic gear oil in that weight. All of them already have friction modifier in them. Do I run just the oil with the modifier, add the Mopar additive, or order non friction modified oil online and put the additive in like I would be doing if I was using the fluid made out of ground up ivory from the dealer?

I would prefer to use Royal Purple, which has a price edge on the dealer stuff by $17 a quart.

Mobil 1 or Royal Purple. I don't care for Royal Purple myself, too much 'gimmickery' with the purple dye for me.

Either way, run the Mopar friction additive in those fluids as well.

I just put lucas syn. gear oil in and no chatter.

My differentials in the rear making noise I was using Mobil 1, I am going to get the mopar stuff. I found a place online BuymoparPartsnows.com they are selling mopar for. $19.00 a quart I need to call make sure it is the right stuff.

I paid $34 / bottle for the unicorn blood / leprecaun semen the first time around... then a couple hundred miles later it got tossed when I decided to have a professional shop redo my diff. Anyway some shops have a a drum of the stuff (this shop specializes in Jeeps, gear swaps, etc.). They indicated it was much cheaper than the per qt. price. So I guess what I am saying is if you don't want to compromise (I have a hard time going with an alternative without knowing it is at least equal to stock), you might be able to find an independent shop that buys drums of the stuff, and it will be cheaper. Heck they may just sell you a gallon jug if you bring your own bottle in. Just a thought.

It isn't compromising to use a less expensive, and likely better quality, gear oil other than generic gear oil with a Mopar sticker on the bottle. You don't change your motor oil/filter with "genuine" Mopar oil and filter do you?

It's not a bad idea to hit up a trusted shop but even they would probably upcharge you for any fluids. What did they itemize the gear oil out to when they redid your differential?

This is why the manual states industry standards (such as API ratings/classifications) and why the shelf brands comply to them.

I'm not saying you can't use factory fluids, but if there's a readily available fluid that meets or exceeds OE specs I'm going to use it.

Any GL-5 full synthetic is fine as long as the additive is used. There is no "factory oil" because Mopar doesn't make gear oil.
