I go to Pine Island pretty frequently due to family on the island. Cayo Costa/Sanibel is pretty fun, did you eat at Cabbage? How did you get there? My cousin Capt's one of the ferries there

We stayed a week in a house in Cape Coral. The house rental included a boat.

Whole area is awesome - yes we ate when we got to Cabbage. We beat the crowd of ferries.

Something I'd noticed in regards to the front of my front drive shaft is the front diff feels pretty f'ing hot to the touch after a decent drive.

Don't know that this is related or if the front diff just runs hotter than the rear.

Anyone else ever put their hand to the front diff after ~ a 30-40 mile drive?

I would think it's the heat from the motor making it hotter

^^^^.........and that is one of the great things about JF.

Always helps to get a "second set of eyes" on things.

Thanks - I hadn't thought of that.

Got to the first project this morning - swapping the new the front drive shaft cv's.

Today proved one of my theories.

1. Life is short

2. Life usually doesn't go as planned

3. The way life does go is often disagreeable.

A shameless plug of the dog:

Got everything out from under it and pulled the cross member

Support the tcase:

Each end of the ds has 6 8mm bolts. The diff end is a mother****er to get to all of them - but doable.

Once you get all 12 bolts out and you can't manually collapse the shaft enough you'll notice the tcase end has purchase points to get in and pry just enough to wiggle the ds out:

Looking at the diff end:

What comes out:

Cv's dissassembled:

.........and this is what I have:

The cv's I got didn't fit my application. The t-case end didn't sit deep enough for the snap ring to properly seat and the diff end just flat out wasn't the right diameter to fit the splines of the drive shaft.

As of now

after

I have an order for a salvaged front drive shaft compatible with my '07 4.7 -
guy says it's off an '09 that had 12K miles on it. Let the record state that to my knowledge at this point - there are no rebuild kits for the cv's on this part number front driveshaft on a WK:

I did get another delivery from the Brown truck today

Got the salvaged front driveshaft today:

New to me shaft installed. (Putting the tcase in neutral helps line all the bolts up):

Crossmember back on:

Reengage the tcase and take it for a spin.

Aside from getting the tcase end cv anew I'm back in the same boat. Diff end is slinging grease:

The same exact thing is still going on at the differential end of this front shaft.

WTF?!?!

There really isn't any evidence of grease coming out of the cv from anywhere but it is definately slinging it. That last pic is after I swiped the "fin" of grease with my finger to inspect it.

I'm really kind of at a loss at this point.

I have considered that adding the Rusty's spacers up front changed the diff flange cup/front shaft cv interface but I'm grasping at straws.

Got the new rotors and pads swapped in today:

Then I pulled the stock rear tracbar (22mm bolt/nut at each end) and measured:

The pic is off but it measured 40 3/16" eye to eye:

I adjusted the Rusty's tracbar out to 40 13/16" as a starting point.

I forgot to get any pictures but I pulled the rear springs in all this and reset my rear set-up.

Rear driver has from the coil bucket up: 2 isolators, spring, 1/2" spacer, 2 isolators.

Rear passenger has 2 isolators, spring, 1/2" spacer, 1 isolator.

Here's a pic of the Rusty's before I'd gotten everything buttoned back up:

The driver side just doesn't drop like the passenger side:

Even with the fuel tank notched the upper control arm bottoms out:

So I ran to O'Reillys to rent these:

.....and go the rear driver spring in place:

So I got everything torqued back on and drove around a bit - and my starting point for the tracbar pushed the rear axle too far to the passenger side. It took 2 more tries but eventually I got it centered good to my eye.
I ended up turning the adjust in 4 full turns from my starting point.

Tomorrow I'll get some more pics of the final result of today's wrenching.

An update:

The diff end of this new-to-me front drive shaft must have needed some drive time to "position" itself because it no longer slings grease.

So - this morning I remounted all the armor underneath:

The red Jeep is ready for Colorado!

2013 Colorado Trip

Well it's been pretty much a year to the date that we took a trip out to Colorado and we just got back in late last night. I'll have more details and pics forthcoming but needless to say it was an amazing trip.

We went back to Keystone (Summit County) where just a couple minutes puts you in Montezuma which is the epicenter for a multitude of trail heads.

This year we ran Keystone Gulch again.

Radical Hill to Saints John.

Webster Pass to Handcart Gulch to Red Cone.

And Deer Creek to Middle Fork of Swan River to North Fork of Swan River.

Here are some pics respective of that order:

As mentioned above I'll have more detailed posts in the next few days as I compile all the pics we took but until next time.......................

Yes, you should. It'd be quite a bit further for you but I think you'd find it worth the drive.

We stayed in River Run Village, Keystone.

I'm still putting together pics as we had several cameras with different shots.

Not to mention - posting pictures has become a complete PITA IMO and photobucket is once again being a biznatch.

^^^ Well I was in the process of uploading and posting more photos and a trip report when our hard drive crashed. So, it'll have to wait.

Right now I'm just glad I invest in Carbonite.

On another note: I took time to give the red Jeep a deep cleaning on the inside. Looks good as new.
