It could be the recirculation flap mechanism.
I had the 1/2 gear part that operates the recirculation flap break. It closed recirculation flap all the time, even when the knob was not set on it.
This gear is a half gear located under the dash, near the center hump on passenger side. You need to remove the cover & look for broken plastic.
I did not change it myself but the mechanic knew right where to go & as I watched he pulled out the part.
It looked fairly easy to check & replace.

My noise case back so I just unplugged the actuator because I'm cheap and don't really use the recirculate
How do we get to the actuator to unplug it?

The recirculate actuator is behind the glove box, so you have to remove that. If it's one of the other actuators there is a panel under the steering wheel you can remove to get to them

I'm bringing this thread back to the top to see if anyone has verified that this actuator gear thing is what's causing the loud noise before I tear into my wife's '08 Grand Cherokee to see if I can get the noise to stop. Does the '08 have the same setup as the '05? Hers has got the automatic dual climate control.

Has anyone replaced this gear and got the noise to stop?

2010 Jeep Liberty noise

I have the same noise and problem on a 2010 Liberty. It is coming from the actuator on the air dam in the heating system. Looking for a resolution.

This is usually some leaf or twing got into the blower. Remove the blower, remove the leaf or twig and put it back together (unusally 3 screws). ... buy a cabin filter if it happens alot.

or ... try turning the fan to high then off then high then off and try and chop up the leaf or twig with the fan if your lazy.

Has anyone been able to find the cause and resolution of this yet? Happens almost every time I start my car for around 15 seconds... Pretty annoying...
