Looking at an '08 Overland today (73k miles)- will this be reliable for 3+ years?

Looking at trading in our H3 Alpha on an '08 WK Overland this afternnon. Should I be concerned about 73k miles? Only looking to keep the jeep for 3 years or so, but I figure I need another 30k miles out of it. I read the "what to look for when buying" thread, so I'll go through the P,R,D and all of the electronics, but long term, am I buying this thing as a ticking time bomb?

We traded in our '02 WJ Overland with around 75k miles or so when the transmission started going, I just want to make sure I'm not buying into what I traded out of a few years ago.

Thoughts?

Much more refined than the WJ. You should be fine with it for at least another 73k. Much more reliable and a better engine than the 5 cylinder in the h3

Just to be clear, the H3 Alpha has a V8.

I'm not comparing the two vehicles, the Alpha has been the best vehicle we've owned. I'm looking at down sizing a bit, but still wanted to get something nice. I just don't want to have to dump $2k to $3k in whatever fixes over the next year or two. I wasn't sure if buying at 73k miles was setting me up for that or not....

I'll echo what WieSel said. Plenty of WK folks in here alone running 100+K mile rigs strong. That Jeep should easily give you another 30-40K miles (depending on your annual miles).

Just make sure you give it a general maintenance overhaul for a good baseline. Not only for your peace of mind but also for when you go to trade/sell in the future.

I jumped out of a '10 H3 Adventure(actual last one made, excluding the Avis fleet order) into a '08 Laredo Diesel. Other than a crank position sensor($93.17) and a glow plug($0.00), I've had all trouble free miles. Had to add tires and oil changes, but those don't count. Jeep had 39K on it when I bought it, now has 74K.

The WK is a great Jeep but not without faults, look for:
1. Leaking sunroof - pour water into the drains and check dripping into the cabin.
2. Try to engage 4 low and check that you don't get a fault message. ELSD electrics are known to give issues.
3. Shift to R, then shift to D, if you hear and feel a clank it's the differential bushings, more common than other faults.
4. Take a right turn at high speed, check that no ticking noise, the right front half shaft may be bad.
5. Check the shift gate - that the selected gear is displayed properly.

Engines (4.7 & 5.7) and transmissions are known as reliable but give them a good inspection.

Good specifics. I'll look into those. This will be used as her daily driver, but will also follow my TJ around the local offroad events. So I'll probably do just a simple 1" lift or so, wheel spacers, and +1" size tires (265/65-18?). Assuming all goes well at the dealer.

And must - skid plats and rock rails.

Test drive went great! So we traded in the Hummer for the Overland, hope to get the mods shipping this week. I think I'm pretty set on a 1.5" to 2" lift, 255/65-18's, wheel spacers, and a tint.

Very nice! I don't think you will be disappointed.

Very nice. I have 160k on mine. Just clicks right along.

That is one sweet-looking rig. I didn't post earlier because I was disgusted by your 3yr/30k expectations. Now that she's yours, hopefully CarLove will take over you'll own her and love her for the next decade/200k.

I bought my 08 Limited 5.7L with 75,000 miles just over a year ago. Im already at 87,xxx miles. Its still trucking along, and hauling a** lol. Besides my "hemi" tick that I have been neglecting, its been great. Installed a superchip, a bwoody 4" short ram intake, and a nice muffler / reso delete. And its faster than its ever been.

But I still have 5 more years on this loan, so I have to make it last well into the 150k mark or more.

Congrats!! You will fall in love w it in few seconds. I bought mine almost 2 months ago... worth it.

Although it may be too late now, a good aftermarket warranty might offset any big expensive costs you may encounter. I got a lifetime powertrain warranty through the dealer, although it's a pain to have to take it to them for work, nice peace of mind that I won't be on the hook for full price if something happens.
