bbanger, you're correct.

My Dad got his first Audi in 1986. Picked it up for a song due to the bad press and ended up giving it to myMom and he bought an 1987 model. First ticket I ever got was in that blue Audi 5000. 5 cylinder thumping. I loved that car, right up till we got rear ended by a drunk driver in a VW bug. Then we got another one. My Dad drove Audis until he died in 1995.

I owned one myself for a brief time. Loved it, but ended up going back to an SUV. I simply missed the room.

I can see no problem with neutral. The only reason I could think of that they "wouldn't advise it" is because the potential engine damage, although nowadays it should hit the rev limiter until you get stopped and shut it off. The problem with shutting it off is you loose power steering, and if you hit the brakes more than once or twice you loose power brakes. If, in the heat of the moment you turn the key back too far the steering wheel will lock and that can only end bad. The way I see it, better to blow up the motor than to blow yourself and any passengers up in a "fiery crash".....so to speak. I'm not even remotely judging what you did. You made it safe and when you aren't expecting it you aren't exactly rationalizing, but in the future, neutral might be the better choice.

aaron makes a good point. I know if that happened to me and i was on the highway and coming up on a mob of cars at 100+ and i scrambled to turn the key, i would likely turn it all the way causing the steering to luck, and that wont end well.

Guys you can't lock the steering wheel when the shifter is in Drive.... So no worries there.

As for not having power brakes, Well that just means you would have to push harder like back in the old days. Hell i remember my chevelle from high school..... drums all the way around and NO power assist.. made for some butt puckering moments lol

Ok, so I checked the pedal box again, nothing.
I also removed the PCM fuse (f20) and recallibrated the pedal using the power on/press pedal. power off/start routine.
The Jeep feels totally different when accelerating, is smother (no sudden changes) and the pedal has not stuck again. In fact it feels so much better to drive than ever before. Maybe a bad series of reading from a sensor messed with the PCM? who knows, that may also be what caused the surging at the lights before as well.

In future, not so much for mine, but for my passengers safety, I will use Neutral if it happens again. If i blow the engine, ill just rebuild it. no biggie. Its easier to rebuild the engine than a person.

My emergency procedure for a stuck throttle (fortunately never used!) has always been:

1) STAND on the brakes for all they're worth. The braking system on any car since the 50s should be able to at least prevent further acceleration, if not stop the car against the engine (even a Hemi) at WOT. If nothing else, this will keep your speed sane. You WILL have power brakes at least the first time, even at WOT. There's a check valve in the brake booster to ensure that.

2) While standing on the brakes and continuing to steer to a safe location, turn the ignition off. The shifter interlock (AT) or pushbutton (MT) will prevent you from turning the key to the point where the steering wheel locks. NEVER NEVER NEVER try to shift to neutral, the risk of passing neutral and hitting reverse in an automatic car is far too great. Not for mechanical damage, but that would lock or back-spin the driving wheels and send you out of control. Turning the ignition off is the only guaranteed no-screw-up-in-the-panic move you can make.

3) Change shorts.

That was what I was always told, and practiced (luckily, I didnt have to change the shorts)
I can see this becomming a big debate on what is safest. Whatever keeps you alive i guess.

Also a 5.7 goes from 60 to 100 in less time than you realise. So honestly, until it happens to you,, please dont judge others.

I decided that it was safer to take avoiding action than put others lives at any more risk than they were already at.

Now Just because its done it this time, doesnt mean that its a bad dog, I need to find out why it did it and fix it, then it will probably be safer than yours. At least i know what "may" happen, having experienced it first hand and will be more prepared should it do it again.

My post was intended for feedback to see if anyone else had experienced this (and the "mythical surging problem")

Well, thats totally up to you but yes, in my opinion it is a bad dog and for my family's safety it would be gone the next day if not sooner. You could have also killed somebody else, or god forbid your family member-would you still want to keep it then?

This is simply not something you want to mess around with, this is very, very serious, safety is always first. Hopefully your not driving it around until after you fix it.

I know its what everyone at the dealership says but i also work for a dealer ( Audi Service Advisor ) and I probably get that same complaint about once a month and they are the hardest to diagnose. Talking to the manufacture there is "never anything wrong with the car." and we actually only do get these complaints from customers who have non audi mats in there cars. So thats the easiest thing to rule out.

IIRC there is a neutral rev limiter of around 4000 rpm at least with my 5.7

So throwing it in neutral should be safe as you will hit this rev limiter...

in my experience if you throw it in reverse it stalls or kills the engine. It doesn't lock up the tires. My brother did this one time with me behind him at 65 (he was going from second/third to D going downhill and went to far somehow) and the myth busters tried the same thing with a automatic car and it also killed the engine.

edit: I should add my brother had a 93 grand cherokee and I think the mythbusters used a POS car. The transmission in your jeep could act differently but I don't know if it would
