Jeep/Deer

I was on my way back home from a work trip out west.
On my way back spent a couple days Mohave desert and Capitol Reef. Everything went great until in the middle of the night in the Nebraska on I-80 doing 75MPH I hit a deer. The Fricking thing just appeared out of nowhere, all I remember is seeing it looking at me. I think we both said "Oh Shi**" at the same time. I never had a chance to even hit the brakes, luckily it went under the jeep.
With a damaged radiator I was able to drive another 50 miles to get to a shop. The next day was a saturday & they were unable to find a new radiator for a CRD. They managed to get a Hemi radiator to work and I was able to make it home. My hats off to the guys at Midway Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Dealer. Jay & Chris Thank You They put in the extra time on a saturday to make a Hemi radiator work and help me make it back to Chicago.

My front while not looking too bad I think is really messed up. The impact pushed up the structural supports about 2". The new radiator should have dropped in but the bolt holes were out of whack. My hood locks and latches perfectly but sits 2" above the fenders which are also elevated. I go in for insurance estimate tomorrow. With 162000 miles on it I'm worried they may total it!

The most important thing is that you didn't get hurt. Your WK can hopefully be repaired. I feel bad for the deer too but it's an animal not a person. Accidents do happen.

Glad to know you're okay, and I understand your concern for the jeep.

Do you think that having the 4xGuard Matrix would have helped?? Living in Canada, and driving though sections where caribou/moose/deer outnumber people is a big concern of mine.

I remember reading a thread where somebody had full matrix and hit a big dear it banged up the matrix pretty good but I think the jeep came out pretty fine

You really think a Matrix would handle a Caribou or Moose? Might save the front end and toss it onto the roof.

They may total that, depends?

You maybe able to keep it for the "salvage price" ... so ask what that price is.

I see the nice wheels... any extras if you go the total out road pull them and any extras and sell or keep them.

Bottom line if repair > total price .. then they will total it.

That is a really small deer. Brush guard would have saved the rad.

Yikes man! I had a similar thing happen to me around this time of year in Nebraska as well. My uncle who lives near there said he's never seen so many deer at night in the 60 years he's lived there as he has the last couple of years. The deer hit the side of my wife's Highlander (I was driving) and caused about $3500 damage. Bumper, fender, and door all had to be replaced.

Just happy to hear you're OK.

The matrix may have helped not sure. I think the major issue will be the realignment of the cross members that were forced up as the deer went under.
I felt terrible about the deer but at least it only suffered for a moment.
Ill see what the insurance company says today.

thanks

if you get a stronger front end.. just pray you don't hit a person with it.. crumpling front ends don't just protect the driver.

glad you are ok OP, cars can be fixed!

Count your blessings. Deer through the wind shield--even a small one--can kill you.

I feel lucky, I just got back from estimator he put it at about $3,500.00. I'm happy I thought it would be more. Hopefully they will not something else once they take it apart.

He looked up what they value a 2008 Grand Cherokee Limited with 162,000 miles on it. It was over $17,500.00 I was surprised it was that was much & he did not specify a CRD.

Its now at the shop getting fixed, should be done end of next week.

Yes AJeepZJ, it was gross, there was meat & skin hanging from both tow hooks, front skid and other places...the deer ended up in 3 pieces.

Glad you are ok....some people panic and end up on their roof. Better to hit the deer.

You got to make it to 200K

Thanks,
Yea, I had that thought to turn the wheel but sure glad I didn't.
I would have for sure rolled the jeep and still would have hit the deer.
Hoping to get that 200,000.
I had some weird things happen with the temp gage. A couple times it suddenly would max out for about 5 minutes then quickly go back below half. I hope its just because of the use of the Hemi radiator and hope its not causing any further damage.
