How to diagnose service 4WD message?

The service 4WD message is flashing on my sister's 05 WK Hemi and has been for some time. How do I figure out what my be wrong? The WK only has 42K on it.

Software level of the FDCM needs to be the first check and make sure it's up to date. Then will need the code it is showing so we can help what to check from there.

Mine gave me that same message today. First came "Service 4wd", then came "the "Electronic Brake" error. The ABS light came on and the traction control light came on. I disconnected the battery for 20 seconds and then operated as normal. After about 250 feet of driving all the lights went off and have been off for about 30 miles now. My question is.. Will a shorted wheel sensor cause this error? I did notice at one time that the insulation on those wheel sensors had been rubbed abut I have not checked them since.

"Service 4wd" was a common problem in my '05 Hemi until I changed the failing ignition switch a month ago. Haven't seen it since!

I have the "service 4wd system" message up all the time now. I hooked up my superchips programmer and got code C141D. I have narrowed my problem down to needed a new solenoid for the ELSD in the rear axle.

If you bring it to an autozone or anywhere like that they can hook up a scanner and give you the code to help you narrow down your efforts a bit.

I had similar 4 wheel service warning but I also had a nasty smell like something burning.

I was also in low gear and used hill descent.

I shut it off took it out of low and the warning went away as did the smell. So far about 1000 more miles no problems. I have not tried the hill descent again yet

I had this same message a couple weeks back. I took it in and they replaced the 4x4 actuator under warranty. Haven't seen it since. So I think it can mean a lot of different things. The only real way to tell is to look at the codes.

Also found out about Jeeps $100 deductible on a power train warranty... which is really lame.

My question is this... I had my local auto parts people give me a free ODBII scan and nothing showed. Should it have showed that I have bad sensor, solenoid etc or will that have to be done with StarScan? Second, if the wheel speed sensors fail, would that fault show up on ODBII, or will I need to have the ABS computer scanned for those ?

Well then I would say you are one of the lucky ones. There is a TSB to do a flash on the system that fixes an erroneous displaying of that message.

As for me.. mine is not erroneous.. I've got all sorts of differential binding. When I turned into my driveway this evening my Jeep was hopping around like I was in 4 low. Tire dragging and the whole thing. Not a good feeling. Loud clunking in the front and rear axles. There is a real problem here for sure.

No codes and it is doing all of that stuff? I would take it to a dealer, or someone who knows jeeps really well.
