Hemi or diesel

Was looking at two different jeeps:

2007 crd with 123k asking 15990

Or

2005 5.7 with 90k asking 12774

Why?

Zlartibartfast 09-19-2013 12:22 PM

Diesel has a turbocharger, Hemi doesn't. CRD engine is from Mercedes-Benz, Hemi is from Mopar. Diesel models typically run a few $K over their Gasoline counterparts (I have read it's largely because the tolerances for diesel engines are higher, and tooling is more expensive).

123K miles the on the diesel vs. 90K on the Hemi, they're both about the same "age" in terms of average lifespan before a rebuild.

The diesel will probably get about 50% better fuel economy than the hemi, and has the same pulling power. Where I live the fuel cost/gallon is about the same for each.

I am biased - I drive a CRD

If you plan to tow alot get the diesel for sure. Each engine has its ups and downs. What are your plans after you purchase?

xer0 09-19-2013 12:30 PM

Daily driver mostly. I don't really tow anything on a regular basis, but that extra power is always nice when needed. Has the 3.0l been able to receive tunes like other diesels?

With the two what will be my common issuies?

xer0 09-19-2013 12:33 PM

Idk how much mods I will do to ether. Probably just cai and exhaust, might but spacers on it what size tires fit with 2inch lift? Never a GC guy always love wranglers but can't buy my dream wrangler right now so looking at GC instead

I think the 07 is a good deal , the 05 is overpriced and should be 1500-2K cheaper before tax . If i was in an area with access to diesel and good diesel mechanics if i run into trouble myself ( i don't know too much about diesels ) I would take the 07 - easy . even stock the diesel performance isn't all that bad and with the tunes available ( do a search on here) , the performance can be close to hemi performance with gas milages far better then the hemi .
just my .02

I would get the 2007 to avoid a first year high milesge used 2005.

High mileage? Average miles per year on a vehicle is 12k-15k which on an 8 year old vehicle would put it at 96k-120k. So 90k miles on a 2005 would technically be low. The 2007 would be considered high mileage.

xer0 09-19-2013 03:21 PM

Any more thoughts?

Lustra 09-19-2013 03:24 PM

My vote is for the diesel, cheaper on fuel and has better resale value at any point in time.

Yes , the mileage is stored in the PCM , it's only available through a DRB scan, it is irrelevant to 99% of jeepers

What about the other 1%?

Do a search for Green Diesel tune. It will increase mpg by about 2-3 mpg and bump up power and torque at the same time. It will be much better on the wallet for a daily driver than the Hemi.

I leased an 05 Limited and it was great for the 2 years, but when the 3.0L Diesel became available I bought it when the lease was turned in. Only Major issue with the Diesel was the with the swirl motor( common problem just search the forum.) But up until then and since there have been no issues and I'm at 112K now. One suggestion with the diesel would be purchase the GDE tune. I can't believe that I waited so long to do it, but I wanted to make sure that I was past warranty so there was no excuse to void any repairs. With the GDE tune I am getting at least 3 MPG better than before. But after a month it is still climbing. Plus I don't tow and use mine as a DD, still love it and am tempted to look at the 2014 Diesel, but with the lift coming soon for mine, I will keep it until it is dead.

Its all relative. 123k on the diesel may be high mileage or it may be in really nice shape.

90k miles on a 2005 hemi is high mileage to ME. But i would not get a 2005 wk anything.
Plus... No MDS in 2005, first year issues are possible. Service records, overall condition and options would be important also.

yzjwk 09-19-2013 07:26 PM

It's a myth that 05's came without MDS . my 05 and every one i've ever seen or heard of on here and elsewhere has MDS . Although there are some 5.7 HEMI's without MDS , they were never installed in a WK .
