Here is the strut being screwed into the top part of the liftgate.

I did mine this week. The mop handle I used was the perfect size to hold the lift gate up. I started the top about halfway and then started the bottom. It was no problem.

Jeremy, that price was each, right? Struts on my WK are shot.

I paid about $11.00 each from www.rockauto.com. The total for the 2 liftgate struts, the 2 back glass struts and shipping was $55.90.

The price I paid was for the both of the struts plus shipping all-in.

Just did mine in the driveway at lunch. Pretty straightforward with all the hints here.

solution I used with same problem

I encountered the same problem when I removed one strut from the liftgate. I needed to remove both struts from the liftgate which then allowed me to open the liftgate further and gain the extra half inch needed to install the new struts. Your problem may have been different.

I just replaced mine... because I was unloading some stuff out of the rear of the Jeep. I opened the hatch and pushed it open, took out some tools and turned back to get something else, and then BAM... I hit my head on the hatch as it came down about 1/4 of the way... After the birdies cleared, I stopped at Advanced Auto and bought new struts...

It took 15 min to replace both. I removed one strut, and started the top bolt, and then pushed up on the hatch while I started the bottom bolt. Once the bolt was started I used a power driver to finish it off.

I used some of the advice in this thread and replaced mine last night on my '05 WK. Took both of the old ones off, and once I did that, my liftgate went significantly farther up (relative to the length of the strut, I mean). Did it by myself, so the hardest part was holding the liftgate up at the just the right position to get the lower bolts aligned and started. Overall, not a difficult small project at all.

06 wk here.
I loosened the old ones a few turns, then had a helper hold the lift gate up. I removed both supports at the same time and then reinstalled them. Removing both supports gives all the room necessary to lift the hatch a little more for reinstallation. Had no problems and with the helper it took about 5 minutes total.
Bought at Canadian Tire, $29.99 each.
Good luck and use an extra set of hands.

thought some might find this useful -- i secured the top good then used a ratchet strap to pull it into alignment.

$11 each at rockauto, way cheapper than local places even after shipping.
