Headers for my 5.7 Hemi

Dropped my Hemi 5.7 06 WK GCO off this morning at the local custom exhaust builder. He's going to try and make a jig so he can produce them as needed for those who might be interested. They'll be silver or black ceramic coated (mine will be black) stainless steel shorties that will bolt to the existing head pipes. I'll be popping in on him from time to time to check on the progress. If he can't easily do the boltup shorties he'll try to make them similar to the stock SRT exhaust headers. If he goes that way, head pipe mods. will be required.

Here you go, JM.....http://www.quickoildrainvalve.com/Se...ts.asp?Cat=102 I bought the F106N, permanently attached a hose to it, and tuck it up in behind the skid plate. I also put a rubber cap in the end of the hose after draining to keep any remaining oil residue from leaking. You will absolutely love it when you get it and start using it.

Ech0sh4y, for now the price is going to be based on the amount of work involved, and the perceived marketability of 5.7 WK headers to Jeep forum members and the general public. He said he would shoot for a $700-800 pricepoint though. IMO, not bad, since no one else makes shorties for the 5.7 WK, and the long tubes are twice the price and a much bigger pain to install.

Well, the header guys have had my 5.7 WK for a week and a half now, and are a little more than 1/3 done. They have the easy (passenger) side pretty well set up, and tack welded, but still have to weld in the EGR tube and do a final check for fit. They had to extend the collector for needed clearance, so these will not be bolt on without headpipe mods. He said it's alot more work than he expected, and will probably not build anymore, as he has to piece everything together and then grind the welds before having them ceramic coated. If he had his own mandrel bender (~$500,000), he'd maybe do it, but would also need more help in the shop because of the time involved. Just at first glance I can sure tell that there will be a significant difference in exhaust effectivess, just based on the side by side difference between the stock manifold and the header. The stock setup is obviously very restrictive, with each cylinder dumping into the path of the next until it exits to the headpipe. Check out the pix.

Ok well that's awesome! but also sucks... i was hoping for headers! Time to hunt for someone that does custom exhaust work around town. =) Keep us posted!!

** I doubt a mandrel bender is $500,000. More like $3-5,000. Type-o I hope!

A mandrel bender was in 6 digits last I looked..... I paid $2K for used uncoated headers for my one Viper and a WK header I might be interested in personally IF and ONLY if they showed a real HP/TQ gain that made it worth the expense.

With abit of work - trimming. You can fit SRT8 headers.

I think anything will be better than stock headers... they are horrible..

Boy, maxst2, are you ever right there? Seeing them side by side (see pix) is amazing. I promise there will be substantial gains all around. Kind of wish I had had it dyno'ed first and then again after. The stock "logs" are sooooo bad it's not funny, especially on the driver's side when cylinders 3,5, and 7 fire in succession. There has got to be a giant "log jam" (pun intended) at that point as just when 3 is exhausting, 5 fires and exhausts right into the path of 3. The same thing happens as 7 fires into the path of 3 and 5. I know that when I put the JBA shortie headers on my Hemi LX, it made the biggest difference of any of the mods. I had done and, in fact better than all the others combined. I am hoping for the same here.

I thought of SRT-8's, and told the guy that if he couldn't make shorties work right to make them (gave him pix of both setups) similar to the SRT's. The real problem with the SRT's though is that they port match (actually bigger on the header) on 3 sides, but on the 4th side the header "overhangs" the port (kind of offset) and the exhaust coming from the head would slam into it causing all kinds of turbulence and more than likely adversely affect the free flow characteristics of the header. The other problem with the SRT's is that they don't have the exhaust "tap" for routing exhaust gases back to the head and then the EGR, so you'd be driving around with an EGR light all the time. You used to be able to get the EGR delete feature on the DS tuner, but they took it out because it rendered a portion of the emission system inoperative. Apparently the only way to get it now is via a CMR tune (if you could get them to do it), but who wants to pay~$300+ for a CMR tune, plus the price of the tuner? I am sure the stock SRT's could be modified to include the EGR "tap", but at what cost, since the header flange for the SRT doesn't have a provision for it? The port overlap would be a little more difficult to address.

I'll drop by again on Monday or Tuesday to see how they're doing now. He was hoping to get them finished and off to get ceramic coated by late last week or early this coming week. I am patient, and if he needs it another week, that's OK with me.
