Elephant Hose Installation step by step 3.0L CRD

A ruined swirl motor aroused my interest in the Elephant Hose Modification. After reading all about on this forum, I decided to do it. Others have posted descriptions of their EHM's. This is how I chose to perform the task.

FINALLY!!! thanks so much man for makin a step by step
ive read all the other "how-too's" but they just didnt make sense
i am FAR from a car guru and needed step by step instructions and the word "thingy" is probably more helpful than the actual parts name ahha

thats awesome, i gotta do this on my 08, havent noticed any problems and im at 94xxx KMS right now, but better to be safe than sorry

EHM smoke

On July 4th we took a 111 mile trip. Warm day, mid 80's. During one part of the trip we drove up a fairly steep, long grade. We were not going fast since it was curvy and we were looking for geocaches all along the route. When we arrived at the top, my wife got out of the idling WK and said, "Hey, what is all this smoke?"

I immediately checked my temp gauge and it was OK. I looked and there was hot vapor, hardly visible, rising from my passenger wheel well. It smelled a little oily.

This is the first time we have noticed any output from the new EHM. Most of the day, there was noticeable emmissions from the hose.

By the way, we found 95 geocaches that day. ;)

I think I'm most concerned when a new CRD owners asks "what kinds of problems CRDs have?".

Helpful fellow CRD owners on this site direct those questions to the threads about the swirl motor failure and then he/she posts back, "Well my CRD is running fine right now, I'm not going to do any mod to it."

sadly, it's that owner that comes back on line later and says "guess what, I got a check engine light and the dealer wants $1000 what should I do?"

the best time to do preventitive maintenance is before the system fails.

I think with the swirl motor it is only time until it fails. I believe you can polish the turd (swirl motor, not the Mercedes engine) but it is still a turd.

yea i heard that its not necessarily the oil that kills the swirl motor its just a crap part to begin with lol

nope, I think its great that you are asking the right questions, reading the threads, educating yourself, and doing what folks here suggest with respect to catch cans, new air intake tubes, cleaning up the oil leak etc.

TurboDiesel 07-06-2011 07:32 PM

oh okay good :)
yea i read all the threads and try to educate myself on problems that could go wrong just incase it ever does go wrong

i dont know much about cars so these forums really help out a guy like me quite abit

Believe me, its the oil. Check out the pictures I posted on one of the other threads. When I cracked my old swirl motor open, I must have poured 1/8 of a cup of oil out of the inside of the "sealed" motor. It just can't take having that slow drip of hot oil that seeps from that faulty intake seal. It works its way into the motor and eventually kills it.

Tuco 07-06-2011 11:55 PM

Yep, its probably the oil. Ours didn't look oil contaminated, but after closer look it was oil contaminated. It can also fail if too much oil gets into the intake and gums up the swirl flaps. Anyone with this CRD engine should get the improved intake tube and do some kind of mod like EHM or filter.

So the end under the Jeep, is that simply a drain end (onto the pavement) or is there a catch can under there?
