DIY: Direct Wire iPod install in 05-07 Grand Cherokee

The 2005 - 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee is based on Mercedes-Benz's CAN Bus. At this time, there is no OEM hard-wired iPod integration available for the GC, only a crappy FM modulator: http://www.wkjeeps.com/iPod.htm

I really wanted a hard-wired solution that would both charge the iPod and play through the OEM radio. The solution I found, allows me to do this. Unfortunately, it does not display MP3 tag information on the radio, however, it leaves the iPod unlocked, so I can make changes to the song while the iPod is playing. NOTE: This uses the Satellite radio input, so if you have Sirius, you are SOL.

There are 2 pieces of hardware necessary to do this:

AUX input adapter for the OEM Radio:

iPod to RCA adapter with charging

Both pieces are made by a company called PIE Electronics: www.pie.net

I wrote a DIY, and hosted it here. Works great!

Nice job the final install looks great! I don't mean to knock your post because it's a great idea and it works but the 06 GC's have a Aux input in the front of the CD player. You can use this by buying 2 cables that go from RCA to the standard Headphone jack and a set of RCA extensions (The ones that have 2 female ends and you plug your RCAs into them). You don't get your info on the radio but it works. Cost me about $6. Just another option

Yup, I knew that about the 06's.... but there's no charging of the iPod unless you get a seperate charger.... I'm VERY anal about wires etc, so thats why I went this route... =)

I'm the same way but for now I just charge the Ipod off my computer and then put it in the Jeep and run it dead.

nice work ..
since you are "anal" about wires (as am I), you can combine your DYI with mine .. and have no wires at all

look at the iThrone link in my sig

Looks great! How easy is it to switch the adapters (when new iPods etc come out).

Thx

I permanently glued mine since I'm going to stick to my iPhone for a while.
The whole dock isn't permanently glued to the car though.
