Differential noise WK 2006 HEMI

I failed inspection. The shop says it is the diff but you cannot hear it when it is on the rack. I also need upper control arms and ball joints. How can be sure what is causing the noise? If it is the diff what is the best way to stop the noise? I can fix everything myself except the diff. You can only hear the noise while driving.

Thanks,

James

Failed inspection because of a diff? What state you in man? What is the symptom? Is it whining or loose?

I expect you failed inspection due to the worn ball joints and control arms, not the noise from the differential. If its just a whine at certain speeds a differential will run for a long time with minimal risk of further damage. If it is making grinding or popping noises then it needs to be repaired asap. The best way to determine the cause of the noise is to tear the differential apart and inspect the gears and bearings. A good drive line shop would be my recommendation.

Thanks for the help and comments. Any idea on the cost of teardown and/or repair?

A diff teardown and repair should be around $300 plus parts. But I agree with Nejeep - fix the ball joints and any other items noted on the inspection report and then get it reinspected. If it is just whining, you should pass.

I plan to install the other parts next weekend and then try to pass inspection again.

id remove the diff cover, drain the fluid & see if there are metal particles inside or chipped gear teeth.. clean it good with carb / brake cleaner. reinstall the cover with a new gasket & refill with gear oil. then see if the whine is still there. if it is, diffs can go along time with a slight whine.
