Daughter came home with an 06 XK

Well, my daughter went out and purchased her first car on her own...

She comes home with a 06 commander limited. 117k for $8700

Check engine light is on

Nav system screen blinks, no nav CD.

4wd will not engage, "4wd System service required" message on dash.

She purchased from a small stealership.

Went with her stupid hubby (that's another story)

Dealer closed tomorrow, but I will try and return out Monday.

I can turn a wrench, is it worth keeping?

Could be just a sensor that needs replacing. Without knowing the codes , its hard to diagnose.
I would just replace the NAV system with a new stereo. Why get NAV when our cell phones have better up-to-date navigation
Commander is always in 4wd , if your trying to put it in 4-Low , its due to the N23 recall. Buy a tuner or do the fuse pull and it will work again. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f67/n...4-low-1561787/

Acid,

I've read the n23 recall.
She told me she taught she was doing well cause she knows how I love jeeps.
I was planning on getting the code read tomorrow, will post results...

Articulating brake pedal does not move very far an inch if that much, I'm assuming it has to move closer and farther from driver, my daughter is a border line midget at 5ft tall...

Don't be too hard on her...it's her money after all! Might be a hard lesson to learn in used vehicle buying!

Caddy,
I've been trying to get her out my pockets for years...
That will never happen...
but I've not been hard on her, actually proud of her, price was decent and its a very clean rig...
I've always been looking into mods for it...
I can tell she really wants to keep it, I'm trying to help her do that, but if it's too much I will take it back Monday...

The question to be asking is if it's worth your time to keep wrenching on your daughter and son-in-law's Jeep.

I'd personally never buy a vehicle w/ a check engine light w/o knowing first hand what codes are throwing and what the fix was.

Nav system I could take it or leave it.

The service 4wd system I wouldn't like - the recall issues surrounding that are far too dubious for me to buy that problem.

I feel like the miles are high but that could just be me.

The good news is it's not really your problem.

The bad news is, being a father of 2 girls, I understand feeling like it is.

Yes, unless the price was really good, it's just not worth taking on someone else's problems. Hopefully it's an easy fix.

And you can do the key dance to pull the codes. Cant remember the steps right now. Search for it.

I would take it back and ask fro my money back.....I did a quick search on autotrader for the clayton, nc area....4wd under 100,000 miles and under $10,000 and I found a lot of other vehicles that a first time buyer may be interested in....several nissan pathfinders, toyotas, and hondas.

That will most likely happen.

It's no longer throwing a code.

But leaking antifreeze from hose coming out of heater core in engine compartment.

That Hemi does have good power.

Everything seems to work just fine. For now

A couple of things I would consider in the keep/return evaluation.

Leaking antifreeze from hose coming out of heater core is not good. If you need a new heater core the dash has to be removed. Lots of time involved by either you or the dealer.

On Hemi's. I have stayed away from them because of too many hydraulic moving parts in the engine to shift from 8 to 4 cylinders.

Take those and put them aside. With Jeeps I have found that after year 6 it costs about $1,200/year for the dealer to repair and maintain. Things like wheel bearings, tie rods, sensors, CV boots, CV axle, shocks, struts, etc. A vehicle with less moving parts will cost less to repair and maintain.

I would return the vehicle for the heater core and hemi if you can. If you cannot return it see it they will repair the heater core.

Jeeps are great and fun to drive but you will be spinning wrenches even with a six or a standard eight cylinder.

I have owned 2 six cylinder vehicles and one eight cylinder and know with my current 2005 I will sometime soon be pulling the dash and replacing the heater core or A/C condenser.

My WK came with similar problems, but no leaks or check engine light.
NAV DVD was corrupt, looked real though. You can find them on eBay for $100 or other places for free. 4-Lo wouldn't engage, did the fuse dance and all is well for now. Don't know what to say about the heater core, but if the body is good and nothing else is wrong, I would go at the heater core provided that no special tools are required. Beware of the proverbial can of worms and/or red herring... The heater core could be both. If the car is pissing away antifreeze, who is to say that it didn't overheat and warp the heads?

If the heads are warped then you would have the same indicaters as a blown headgasket, IE milky oil and/or bubbles in the coolant reservoir.

You can use something like this to test:
