CRD starting problems

2008 CRD 130k KMS - dpf delete with GDE tune

Had starting problems a couple weeks ago and thought it was the battery.
Changed it and it was good for abit but has started again..

Need to do fuel filter this weekend

Only seems to happen in the morning and no CEL

Battery? Starter? Injector? Glow plug?

Any ideas?
Any link to when the starter is located on the CRD?

Thanks

the starter is a bugger to get at in the north american jeeps

http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f67/2...eeded-1519587/

if it turns over well but does not start, I'd be more inclined to check for a fuel related issue.

was just at a local auto parts place and apparently there is a starter relay that sometimes screws up??
couldnt see if in my manual but didnt seem to show any relays so i may take a look at that

also gonna hook it up to a tester today i believe, should be able to check the starter apparently...

just got a thing in the mail that i can trade mine in and get more than market value and stuff....seems so tempting at this moment :P

did u guys fill your new filter with diesel before putting it in?
or can u just hook it all up, turn the key to ON position and wait till it fills and then start it?

or hook it up and turn it to on till it squirts out the top? lol
might do it tomorrow

I do the second option i.e. bleed it with the use of the electrical fuel pump ... switching the key at On.
I dont think this has something to do with your issue thou.

I suppose you cleaned the terminals of the battery. I custom made an extra 2 gauge negative battery cable between the battery and the engine block, kind of a hyper-grounding experiment, not because I was having issues.

I remember quite a while ago another crd owner had a defective fuse or fuse relay. I will hunt for that thread.

It is summer out there, glow plugs aren't typically needed or used above 45 deg F so replacing them now would be a waste of time.

Remove fuel line leaving the fuel rail pressure relief valve and plug it. Install a cheap clear tubing/line from a hardware store to the pressure relief valve on the fuel rail and (cleamp it down) and feed into a fuel storage container. Start engine and measure fuel flow from this relief valve. You should not have any fuel flowing out of it while cranking (a no-no) and very little if any while engine is idling. A bad pressure relief valve on high fuel pressure rail is a common cause of hard starting.

Starter should be fine but cranking for long periods of time can kill it.

Is your battery good? If you are using OEM battery, replace it ASAP before you troubleshoot further. Diesels are hard on batteries.

battery is 2 weeks old
worked great for a week after i replaced it but has gotten worse [not as bad as before the battery tho]

dont really have a problem when the engine is warm either..

i pondered just paying the $14 for a new starter relay to see if that helps..

suzieque i always pondered doing the "big 3" upgrade but never got around to it..

thanks for the help thus far BTW
ill check into the fuel line there too

I have not had a battery fail that quick. I suppose you could get it load tested. I did not do the full "big 3" upgrade, I just did the one ground cable.

By the way, it was "fishinbama" that had the relay issue on his CRD, but I'll be dammed if I can find his original thread now. Perhaps send him a PM and post back what he says. At the time, I remember thinking "I gotta buy one of those relays and through it in the toolbox just in case".
