CRD Oil Test Results

Says it all...

TONY: We haven't tested too many of these new 3.0L CRD engines so we are still building the averages file for them. You had this oil in use for 10,476 miles and the wear metals we found in it very close to averages, which are based on a 5,000-mile oil change interval. The oil's TBN was 1.8, which means there was a little active additive left but not much. The oil's viscosity was high for a 5W/30 reading in the 10W/30 range. No gas or anti-freeze was found and both air and oil filtration (see silicon & insolubles) were normal.
Try ~11,000 miles for your next oil change & check back.

Full pic of report here

Very interesting! How much does it cost for the analysis?

Tony,

What brand of oil are you running?

the cost of the analysis is $25 and an extra $10 for TBN. I was going to do one on my CRD but will hold off now.

If you call them they will send you a box of bottles for future samples. I have done around 6 samples with them and they are great.

Maybe I will send my next one in just to help them build a base for the CRD.

I'd also like to know what oil you are/were using.

I had mine done too. I'm running B100 in my 08 CRD and was worried about fuel dilution with the DPF regen issue. Here's what Blackstone wrote:

Quote:
WILLIAM: Slightly high silicon was found in this initial sample from your Mercedes Benz engine, but everything else looks normal. Silicon can be from airborne dirt getting past the air filter, so you might want to have that checked. Wear metals were generally around average, so the silicon may be additive instead of dirt (dirt causes higher metals). Regardless, the engine in your Grand Cherokee looks good and is mostly past wear-in already. That's impressive. They must have worn white gloves when they built this one. The TBN read 5.3, still strong. Try 5000 miles next.
I wrote 'was worried" because after reading these results I think it's much ado about nothing. I changed the oil at 4282 miles because I had nothing else to do that day at automotive lab. I'll change again at 5,000 and then go to 6,000 and so forth.

That last oil change was a free one from the dealer.

I'm now running the stuff from germanfilters and will have that tested as well.

M1 ESP 5W-30 good for 9000 miles

I just got back the results for my latest sample. 9490 miles on Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30 (MB 229.51) and 15,637 miles on the Jeep.

TBN has dropped from 4.66 at 6,249 miles to 2.18, abnormal range.

Oxidation increased from 21 to 25, critical range.

Iron increased from 29 ppm to 44 ppm, just shy of abnormal range.

Boron dropped from 145 ppm to 121 ppm.

Soot increased from <0.1% to 0.1%, still less than the 0.3% peak I've seen.

Viscosity unchanged from 11.4 cS to 11.5 cS.

All other values are essentially unchanged. Next week I'll change the oil to Amsoil AFL 5W-40 and finally hook-up my bypass filter.

Two questions:

[1] Which brand cone filter are you using?

[2] Is this your first analysis since changing the filter?

Which by-pass filter do you have? Let us know how the install goes, esp. on the return line. I plan to add one soon.

10/16/07: Factory fill sampled and changed at 6,147 miles.

5/20/08: First oil change sampled at 12,396 miles, with 6,249 miles on the oil.

5/23/08: I changed the filter at 12,506 miles, with 6,359 miles on the oil.

6/17/08: Last oil sample taken at 15,637 miles, with 9.490 miles on the oil.

Cone filter is Amsoil's largest, EAAU3090-EA. I fitted it directly to the the MAF housing. In fact, it's so long that it just touches a protrusion on the back of the headlight assy, requiring the judicious use of some foam pipe insulation to prevent a nasty rattle.

The bypass filter is the Amsoil EABP110 10" (2 quart) mounted to the BMK-11 mount. I attached this to the fender behind the coolant tank using a sliding bracket I made from 80/20 tubing and some tooling components.

I hope to get to all of this next week, at which time I'll take pictures.

You can have oil samples done through OAI, also. They test for TBN as part of the test. The tbn you have listed at 1.8 seems low. I sell the postage paid sample kits for $27.00. PM me and I will get you one. I included the link to Amsoil's oil testing page and the OAI page. Looking forward to seeing the By-pass setup pictures. I have some on my website of a 4.0L we installed a single filter kit on. my website link is in my signature, then go to the Jeep & off-road page for those photos.

Here's my test from this week with 7,578 miles. I drove in 120 weather on and off road, high speed highway & some stop and go. Looks like it's holding up quite well. I'll change it at 11,000 miles.
This was using the oil from germanfilters.

Wow, that UOA looks pretty good! Got some life left with a TBN of 4.9. Thanks for sharing.

Just for clarification, this is with the ELF LSX 5w-30, correct?
