CRD lacks power between 1500-2000 rpm

Hi i wonder if you guys could shed some light on a problem of power loss i have with my CRD that has done 33,000 miles. If i gradually build up revs before it changes up to the next gear , at about 1700 rpm the power drops off and feels like i am towing or driving into a very strong headwind , it is not a constant power loss but feels more like a missfire and it seems to be getting worse. Also if i coast into a junction with my foot off the throttle the engine braking is extremly exessive as if it is in too lower gear.
No error codes have been displayed as yet.
The power loss seems to be since the G40 recall was carried out last week so may be corrupt softwear or something.
I will visit my dealer in the week , but would like to know what i am talking about so any suggestion are very welcome.

Have you ever put any fuel injector cleaner in it.I run injector cleaner that has some lubrcation stuff in it and it helps keep the performance of the diesel up.I notice when I don't use it for a while the diesel loses some performance and feels sluggish.I use Red Line Diesel Fuel Catalyst.Amsoil also makes good injector cleaners and Cetane boosters.Try some out.The Red Line has Cetane booster in it also so that's probably why the diesel performs better when using the stuff.Don't let the dealer suck you into an injector cleaning they charge way to much for it and a bottle of Red Line or Amsoil additive will do the same thing. What is the G40 recall about ?

When did it last have a good run? Short runs and babying could do this.

Hi Thanks for your comments i will see if i can get a suitable injector cleaner and try that.

It has had 2 services by Jeep dealer the 12 and 24K.The fuel filter was not changed at 24 not sure about 12.

The last time it had a good run was a couple of months back from Hertfordshire to Birmingham and back (dont know wether thats classed as a good run).I do tow frequently with 2 horses + weight of trailer so well over 2tonnes , so the engine is worked reasonably hard. But generally speaking mostly short runs.
Merlin do you think it could be the EGR valve sooted up due to more crank case gas blowby being created from towing (i have a Provent on order).

How often do you check your air filter? It tends to get oily residue buildup in it fairly quickly, by 7,000Km mine is usually ready to throw away, depending on how bad I either replace it or "nurse" it to the next service, have it changed at every service. A dirty filter will starve your CRD and give you a similar feel.

I would start by changing the fuel filter. If the air filter hasn't been changed I would change that as well. You guys over on the other side of the pond have a different style EGR valve from what I understand.

if the fuel filter wasn't changed (a 120.00 service at the dealer ) then i'm betting thats your issue.

If that doesn;t help then it could be a soot build up issue, like merlin is leading too..

Hi i have just researches the documents that i got with the car when i bought it at only 15000 miles (Aug 08) and found the 2nd service was carried out just before i took delivery,so therefore the latest service at 27000miles (July 09) was the 3rd service which was only the engine oil and filter.I dont know if the filter should have been changed at the second service and have no proof it was.
I will buy a fuel filter this week and fit it with the help of the write up in this forum,if that does not cure the fault i will remove the EGR and try and clean that.

Can you not just check with the dealer that serviced it?

I'm doubting the fuel filter was changed..... its interval is 25k or so...

Just get one form Napa and swap it out... it takes 30 min to do...
Or get ready for sticker shock at the dealership for changing the filter.... its like 120+

Cheers for all your comments guys . I will contact the dealer and see if they have any record of the filter being changed at the 2nd service, potentially it could still be on the same filter from when it left the factory ,if the
dealer has the slightest doubt it was changed i will change it regardless.
